If you are resident in Ireland and importing a private vehicle - no. End of.

Just drive around on the english plates for years, if you live outside Dublin. Free m50, speeding and road tax as well. From what I see..

OP, are you trying to find out if you qualify for VRT exemption based on UK residency, or are you just trying to find a loophole in the VRT legislation to enable you to avoid paying it?

Don't register the vehicle here and stay away from all public roads! You can then rest assured that the VRT people won't be interested. ;)

    Buy an ambulance!:D
VRT Category D Examples of Category D vehicles include ambulances, fire engines, vehicles used in the transportation of road construction machinery. The use to which a vehicle is put is also considered when a vehicle is being classified for VRT purposes as Category D. There is no VRT payable on a Category D vehicle.

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Wait until the car is 30 years old. Classics are exempt (or very low).

    :D

If the registered owner's death is imminent get him to leave it to you in his will - inherited cars are exempt. If not, go the a hospice in the UK and give some old fellow a few quid to "buy" the car and bequeath it to you.:p
or live and work in the UK for six months keeping the car insured there.

I get the feeling that there is a resounding "NO" in here.

Funnily enough I can look out my window and see an English registered car
with not a screed of paperwork on the windscreen.

    For some months now.

Maybe I'll ask the owner what his secret is.

Do you think the part Fire Limo is exempt? You could probably get away with running bus lanes and red lights too - what Guarda is going to run the risk that it's a real fire tender? :D

is that legal:eek: and 2 complimentary bottles of bubbly i thought it was illegal to have an open alcoholic container in a vehicle??? are limo`s excempt?

and at €240 its cheaper to ring firelimo than a proper fire engine in an emergengy:)

package includes a uniformed crew and 8 firemen helmets, brilliant:)
and you can watch telly while your house burns down!!

I think your best bet is to hope that the rest of us start dodging our taxes too. That will result in a complete collapse of the health, education and welfare systems (amongst others), resulting in an enormous reduction in the circulation of liquidity causing the economy to collapse. The huge rise in unemployment coupled with the collapse of social welfare means you car is practicly guaranteed to be stolen, meaning not only do you not have to worry about VRT any more, you also get a nice insurance payout. Of course this is assuming your car is stolen near the start before the insurance companies collapse, otherwise you loose your car and get nothing in return. So the best thing you can possibly do is to leave your doors open and the keys in the ignition.

Alternatively you could either not have the car (hint: you don't actually need a car no matter how much you think you do, people did actually live for thousands of years before them and believe it or not kids are more than capable of walking), or you could just pay the costs of it like the rest of us do.

    Feel for you darren,
This is the same as driving a car without road tax, because you are.
To sell a car now is impossible if not the right car, i can't see how VRT has jumped up though.
You should've VRT'd the car months ago.
Im surprised they didn't just take the car off you as they are intitled to do.
    Is the car insured?

A mate of mine had an english reg'd car taken off him, we all warned him, you might not get caught sure but when you do it'll hurt!
There is no way around this im afraid.

Get an english mate to say he owns it and let him apply for it. Then he just gives you the car.
