Hi there and sorry of this is a silly Q (have searched about for answers but found none).
Am new enough to playing Opens etc. and have only ventured out for a few - mostly Singles Stableford or 4-Person Team comps.
I see listings on the GUI site and some of them are 'Scratch Cups'. My h'cap would put me in the Minor category but what exactly are these?
    And can anyone enter them?
    How is the scoring done?

    Cheers for any info guys.

The top prize is a gross prize instead of a nett one. Maybe top 3 gross and then a best nett. Great way to play cheap golf on good courses and improve your game...

Yes anybody can enter once you fall in the h/cap range.

Always strokes and as said, winner is the lowest gross, although there are usually nett prizes.

I think it's up to 4 for Senior
    5-9 for junior
    10-17 intermediate
    18+ for minor.

    Rough figs there.

    Cheers for the responses guys.
So I can enter these as easily as I can enter regular Singles Opens.
Good to know as I always saw these listed and thought it wasn't something that I was valid for.
I'll get a couple of the lads together so and see which Minor (we is all 18+) one we can enter.
    Cheers.

Just wondering do you get many in say the immediate class (playing off 15 or 16) that would just turn up and play the course rather than really try and post a good score. Obviously they would like to be competitive but when your against good guys off 10 or 11 it kind of difficult to match them.

So basically, I want to know are scratch comps taken a lot more seriously than say an open stableford comp??? which in my experience a lot just go to enjoy the day out on a new course

I would say in general any stroke play competition is taking far more seriously than stableford in so far as you cant pick your ball up and must finish out, especially at intermediate level this can make a huge difference, if your hacking out of rough and feel your not in the hole you can decide to pick up were as in stroke play you cannot. That said I think everyone should always play strokes in their own mind regardless of what comp your playing as this is the only true measure of exactly how well you are playing !!

Cheers for that. I generally do count every hole and even in team events i like to finish out holes if I can. I'm just a little wayward of the tee at the moment and when your playing a new course this can really hurt, anyway think I'll play a scratch cup somewhere this weekend as I'm looking for a bit of competitive golf and in my home club theres a lady captains day, with no comp for the men!

nothing like a good competition to keep your mind on things. I normally play much better when I am in a Scratch cup etc

Yea, am playing me first Scratch Cup tomorrow in Navan. Am in the Minor division so will just go out and play me game and try enjoy it.
How does the scoring work anyway?
I am assuming we all play off scratch and play strokes?
Just mark each hole with exact number of strokes and that's it?
Objective will be to hit below 100 so!
