The only one that really surprises me there is no. 15, The Sting. I didn't know it was anything like that successful. Great film though; I would contend that the line "Four Jacks" is the coolest film moment I've ever seen.

Interesting that Fantasia is so high given that its reputation was that it was a "flop" on its original release.

Thats what a 7 year re-issue cycle does for your box-office!

Also why GWTW is so big - that was given a full reissue as recently as the late 70s.

is that GWTW entry not just the takings from 1939?

    also..SW Phantom Menace..lol :pac:

Whoa whoa whoa.. that list must include home media (DVD/VHS/Blu-ray) purchases also.

I find it hard to believe 'Gone With The Wind' took $198.7 in box-office takings (and that's not taking any inflation into account.. in 1939).

EDIT: Much more detailed info on the list above here. For 'Gone With The Wind':
.. For six months, the film played only advance-ticket road show engagements at a limited number of theaters, going into general release only in 1941. Simply put, more U.S. citizens have bought tickets to this movie than any other movie in history, and the cramble to see this event picture in the theater was absolutely huge. Like almost every other movie on the list, this total includes all theatrical reissues of the movie such as 1947, 1954, 1961, 1967, 1971, 1989, and 1998.
To be fair.. if you re-release any popular or acclaimed film to theatres 7 times over 50 years - you're bound to make some "serious dollah"!

Ah these lists are stupid, you can only really judge a films success if you split between pre-Jaws era and the blockbuster era and even then the admissions should be counted instead of the takings adjusted for inflation. Strangely enough people ONLY use the term "adjusted for inflation" when discussing movie box office gross, didn't see anyone saying "hey Ronaldo isn't the most expensive player ever, look at this guy from 1942, if we just adjust...".

Gone With The Wind came from a time before home entertainment and multiplexes where films would be kept in the cinemas for years and years for people, plus it was re-released countless times when there was no VHS or DVD around. Titanic is the most impressive box office performance of my lifetime and it's non-adjusted gross won't be touched for at least 10 years IMO

so did they adjust the wholw GWTW takings at 1939 inflation or did they seperate it out and take a different inflation figure for the seperate 1947, 1954, 1961, 1967, 1971, 1989, and 1998 takings, which I seriously doubt.

    I poo poo this list
