Now that the forum is for all trading card games, I was wondering what CCGs/TCGs people have played, both past and present? Have you travelled abroad to play etc?

I started playing CCGs waaaaaay back in 1994 (wow 15 years!) when my brother brought home 2 starter decks for the Star Trek CCG. I was instantly hooked. Eventually we had 6-7 people playing in the neighbourhood and we ran lots of fun tournaments. When I went to UL, I met more players and we played quite regularly. The Gathering Limerick (called Games People Play back then) and Game both stocked it which was brilliant.

Around 2000, as the Star Trek Card Game was becoming unplayable due to the rediculous amount of rules, I started playing WWE Raw Deal. Absolutely brilliant game which became my primary game for 3 years. While I was more of a casual player of Star Trek, I became a student of the game was was ranked no 1 in Ireland for quite some time. Brilliant fun.

Then in 2003, Star Trek was reborn with the Second Edition which solved all the problems of the old game and that became my main game.

I have also dabbled in other CCGS including Lord of the Rings and Magic

Now in 2009, I am seriously considering taking up Magic with the release of the M10 block as Star trek is essentially free to play nowadays.

I have been to Gencon UK in 2003 for WWE Raw Deal Nationals, I have been to Star Trek European Championships in 2005 (Utrecht), 2007 and 2008 (Berlin) and I went to Gencon USA in 2005 to play the Star Trek World Championships. I have also made a few day trips to major UK events.

Sooo...what is everyone elses story? :)

Have been playing Magic the Gathering for years, bought my first pack around Ice Age (1997?)

@OP: Yeah M10 has a lot of great stuff in it, with cool repints (Lightning Bolt:D), but it's only being released a week before this years Irish Nationals, so we're going to have to get some singles (cards, before the jokes roll in) online, and hope they arrive on time.

I've played MTG on and off for some 8 years now. Cant get enough of it but the cost of the game has limited how much I can play it.

WoW has a pretty good TCG too and I played Yu-gi-oh quite a bit, but only the game boy versions since it's pretty difficult to get good games with skillful players, since it seems to be directly aimed at the younger generation of players.

I dabbled with Legend of the 5 Rings for a bit, but thats impossible to get games for and no computer versions of it, sadly.

Magic is still one of the best card games around though.

I started playing Mtg about 4 years ago,but I haven't really played it in the last 2 years. I'm going to get back into it soon but just haven't really gotten around to building up another collection.

    Hi Guys,

Been a lurker on here for quite a while now. I started playing magic circa 4th ed and played up until around the release of weatherlight. I havent played in a good few years now but the release of 10th ed has got me thinking.

whats the tournament scene like now? Is there Friday night magic running regularly anywhere? I like to play casually but like the odd "serious" event to aspire to.

MTG is very much alive and kicking. In Dublin we now have a games shop, where you will find many a magic player - it's called gamers world and is located behind the jervis centre
. It's run by a great guy called Martin - call him on 087-9299392 if you need more info or better directions.

Friday night magic is quite popular, kicks off at bout 6.30-7.00 every Friday night. It is normally sealed deck. Also we have PTQ's there and pre-releases every time a new set comes out.

For those who are more so casual players who would be interested in meeting some new players and trying some tournaments here's a rough guide. Apologies in advance if you are well familiar with this info. There are 2 types of magic tournaments "limited" or "constructed".

Constructed is when you build your deck before the event and bring it along with you to battle against other players decks. Decks must be a minimum of 60 cards and cannot contain more then 4 copies of any one card [except for basic land - mountain, forest, swamp, plains or island]

Within constructed you have more subtypes - standard, block, extended and legacy being the big 4. The only difference between them is which cards you are allowed to use.

Block = Only cards from the current block are permitted. At the moment this is Shards of Alara, Conflux and Alara Reborn.

Standard = Only cards from the latest 2 blocks as well as the latest core set are permitted. At the moment this is Lorwyn, Shadowmoor, Morningtide, Eventide, Shards of Alara, Conflux, Alara Reborn and the new core set M10 [or magic 2010 as it is also known]

Extended = Cards from the last 6 blocks [I think], as well as the past 2 core sets. Too many sets permitted to list.

Legacy = Anything goes basically although some very powerful cards are banned or restricted [only allowed to use 1 copy instead of 4]

For newer players I recommend Standard or block as a good starting point, because the cards are easier to get hold of and the decks aren't as powerful so you can't get killed by somebody on turn 1 as is the case in legacy.

Then there are limited tournaments. Limited tournaments meaning you are building your deck from a limited card pool. You don't need to bring any cards with you or prepare anything beforehand. You arrive on the day, and will be provided with the required product [currently you would recieve 6 m10 boosters at any limited event]. You open the boosters and build your deck only using the cards you have opened - as well as adding whatever basic land you need. Your deck must contain a minimum of 40 cards. Some players make the mistake of using all the cards they have opened - the best strategy is usually to seperate your cards by colours and identify which 2 colours have the strongest cards and then run with a deck built with those 2 colours. I say usually because sometimes it is correct to "splash" a 3rd or even a 4th colour. A splash is just when you are playing just 1 or 2 cards of that colour, but in m10 sealed you will normally have 2 primary colours you are playing.

For new players limited tournaments are great because you don't need to prepare anything and it's likely that your deck will be of level power to your opponents.

For the more experienced or adventurous of you, there is a large group of us travelling to Prague in early September for a Grand Prix. This will be an event with approx 1500 magic players and the format will be m10 sealed deck day 1 as described above. The top 128 players, or any player who has gone 7-2 or better [7 wins, 2 losses] will proceed to day 2 of the tournament. Last GP we had an Irish man make the top 8 after day 2 which is a fantastic achievement. Read about it here

Nice stuff - good to hear that its still alive in Dublin but as i asked in my previous post - any news about Cork? Is there any website with dates on tournaments currently happening in Ireland? I was big into Magic years ago, then life kicked in :) but it was always on the back of my head... I still remember my "Hatred" - 1st turn kill if lucky deck ... good times ... :)
