Cancelling Job Seekers Allowance

    Anyone know whether you can post a letter to the local social welfare office to cancel the allowance. I cant make it down to the offices because I have just started work and they never answer the phone.

    Best bet is to just let it run it's course and don't sign on the next time (obviously). That's what I did the last time when I couldn't make it down after starting a job. When you haven't signed on they presume that you've found work unless you state otherwise.

    Hello There,


    Yes you can write a letter /note to them telling them that you found work. You could also drop it in the letterbox in the evening. Make sure to use the First day after they have paid you up until or they may look for a refund from you.

    I know they prefer you let them know but they don't cause you any hassle for simply just letting the payment run out after not singing on as they'll just presume you've found work.

    My mother works for the social welfare too and she has said that to me in the past... unless somebody hasn't signed on by late sign on at the end of the month then they'll cut their payment and presume that they've found work.

    In fairness they make it really hard to contact someone unless you have someone's desk number so what do they expect?

    A letter wouldn't be a bad idea though - to make it formal.
