Hearing Aid Assessment - Best Option ?

Think I need to be assessed in terms of my hearing. Been having trouble over past year or so in hearing conversations in group situations. Made a few tentative enquiries by phone with some of the hearing aid agencies and been getting a stream of literature and sales leaflets etc plus several return calls but can't quite make up my mind as to what is my best option.
Should I just go and order a hearing aid
    or
should I just go and place myself in the hands of these 'experts' and take their advice ?
Anybody been down this road in recent times and maybe point out some of the options to me ?
    Tks in advance.

Believe it or not - there are several different types of deafness and its best to be assessed for which one you have. Sometimes a brain scan is done to make sure something unusual isn't happening.

A GP is a good start who can send you on your way. Your GP can also do some quick tests to see if there is something simple going on.

OK and good advice. My neighbour had hearing tests done in Scotland recently which cost him just £300 sterling while he was quoted €1500approx for the same item here. He says these hearing aid agencies are just like garages, there's multimodels on display and 'you pays your money and takes your pick' and at the end of the day there's not a lot of diff between any of them. That's why I'm trying to get a sense of the experiences others have had before making a move.
