Anyone notice that there is now red button functionality on Euronews, channel 203??? Was not expecting that. I'm in Dublin on a UPC branded set top box. It's just basic news and weather but it's a start. So that's series linking and red button functionality released within a few weeks of each other with HD apparently just around the corner. Things are looking good :)

What happens when you press the red button on Euronews?

A menu comes up on the right hand side with news headlines and weather. You can select regular news headlines, European news headlines, business headlines and regional weather forecasts. Go into anyone of them and it gives all news and weather. The regular news headlines could do with an update though as the main headline is that Michael Jackson is dead but I'm sure things will be sorted out shortly when it all updates. Looks quite slick - basic but smart. And video plays out on the right hand two thirds of the screen. I'm sure EuroNews is just the first test channel, to see how it goes.

Pretty much like that, but a little bit nicer, IMO. No scrolling text to distract you either.

See the attached images for a look at the new interactive screen.

Funny how anything new from UPC is to be found here before they (i.e. UPC) let anyone know...

No red button functionality on my standard digital Pace box - Dublin 1.

UPC boxes not NTL boxes and if your pace box is a branded UPC box reboot it.

Nothing here on my NTL mini pace box, but thats not so bad as I'm getting a DVR box installed on Friday and can kiss goodbye to this constantly freezing hardware.

Was it announced that it is a UPC only service? I do not see a problem with someone mentioning that it is not available via satellite.

    Nicely spotted! :)

Interactive isn't something I've hugely cared for but it's nice to see some added functionality.

Whoever called me out over saying UPC CS told me it was coming. I told you. :p

not available on either the old(bulky) or smaller pace boxes

Is it on a DVR sub only ??

Is this a soft launch on Euronews before adding to eg BBC/Sky

I tested it yesterday and this is a UPC service only carried on the Euronews stream.

It is only available on UPC branded boxes AFAIK and the popup after pressing the red button clearly says UPC...

I guess it all comes down to the capacity of the network if it is going to be included on other carriers such as BBC and Sky. Somehow I doubt it, but I have been wrong before (TG)...

No, its also available on non-DVR UPC branded boxes (blue EPG). (Judging from the other posts on this thread it doesn't seem to be available on NTL (purple EPG) or Chorus (green EPG) boxes).

Its' odd that this should unexpectatly appear now. While I'm tempted to say "well, it only took them seven years" to launch interactive, I don't think we can really call it a launch when its only appeared on one channel unannounced. It may be that Euronews run a similar service on other UPC networks which was easily ported to the Irish network - anyone from the Netherlands reading this that can confirm?

    Hi,
can anybody tell me if the UPC units that do carry Euronews interactive have a *change language*option anywere on the menu(s)like a sky box does?

there are 7 versions of Euronews on my plain pace ntl badged box.all show the same video but diffrient language audio.seems such a waste of slots, surely it would make sense to free up these for other services.?

also are HD channels showing up on any standard boxs,if so what epg numbers?

my area seems to have been left in the dark ages by UPC,only standard def available,no BB or phone:confused:

pressing the help button showing technical information.shows number of transport streams 13-184.
anybody elses box chorus/ntl/upc showing other that?
    cheers

Re Euronews, no, the audio option on EPG203 doesn't allow you to switch. The only channel which supports multilingual is TV5, and at that it's only multilingual subtitles. There are still separate feeds for Euronews.

Re HD, I can't see them on my EPG, so it's not like Sky, where the HD channels are listed. I would be interested to know from anyone with HD, if BBCHD is on it's own or does it replace the standard def version?

BBC HD doesn't have a standard definition version. It is completely different to any other BBC channel.

Do you know what EPG number it's on if it's seperate? Are all the HD channels grouped together or mixed around the EPG?

Whilst there are multiple channel numbers for the various languages of Euronews, they all come from the one source. It's not the case that the full video streams are sent for each language. If you tune to any of the seven variants of Euronews, the set top box is still only looking at the one video stream but will alter the audio stream depending on which channel you pick. So basically, there is 1 video stream and 7 audio streams for all 7 Euronews channels. There's no wastage of bandwidth. It's just channel numbers being used up.

And as for BBC HD, there is no SD version of it at all.....it's HD only ONLY.

    BBC HD 135
    Discovery HD 219
    History 220
    Nat Geo 221
    Nat Geo Wild 222
    Crime and Investigation 223
    Eurosport Hd 424.
