Naked female in public library

I'm just back from the opening of a photographic exhibition which is being held in a Public Library, and was quite surprised to see in the middle of some wonderful images of nature, architecture, portraiture and street photography, the photo of a beautiful woman, naked.

From a photographic point of view she is creatively lit and tastefully poised, and I wouldn't mind the oppertunity to take some of these type shots myself. However my posting has two points :

    a) How appropiate is it (in post 2000 ireland) to have displayed in a public library, the photo of a naked woman in amongst other images of nature, architecture, portraiture and street shots.

    b) How would you as a woman / man feel about your naked studio shoot being displayed for all to see in a public library ? Would you be happy to sign a release knowing that ... well your body is going to be displayed for all to see in a public venue ?

The image in question and many many more, can be seen at the Dublin Camera Club's Annual Exhibition which is being held in the Public Library (across the road from the Holiday Inn Hotel) on Pearse Street in Dublin.

It really hinges on how much money is being offered.

    a) Perfectly appropriate. The library are to be congratulated for displaying it as is the photographer for taking it and the model for giving her permission to exhibit it.

    b) I don't have the body for it :-(

Ha.....I'm guessing you've just 'raised' the profile of this exhibition..........alot !
I'll bet the crowds will be streaming thru.......a record attendance I'd say :p
    a) if its tasteful, then OK
    b) no !! (maybe 15 years ago!!)

The content of the Exhibition was solely up to the Judges & Selection Committee that were engaged by DCC. The Library is just the venue in which the exhibition is displayed each year.

I know the image that you are referring to & while being quite unashamedly a nude it is very well lit & tasteful. The photographer who owns the picture does amazing work in the studio & his classes are well worth attending.

Anyway ..... go along & have a look for yourselves. I know there was at least one nude in the exhibition last year too, as it was one of my images. This one was a Male Nude however, which actually raised more eyebrows.

More female nudity in Libraries tbh.

Looks like I should go there even a third time, as I managed to ignore that picture so far. :o

As for your questions: My answer on both is it depends on the picture and how it's done. But as I usually don't like pictures of me it needs to be really good to get my permission to get public

I must admit that when I saw the title of this thread other visions involving Librarians, Black Rimmed Glasses & hair being let down did cross my mind!

Popped in on my lunch, the picture in question is in good taste and wouldn't bother me in the least.

Some really nice shots in there. There was no catalog and no way of knowing who's photo was whos. I knew Sineadw's photos because I had seen them on flickr or pixie. Great shots they are too :)

I'll pop back in again next week, hopefully there will be names up!

So if it wasn't in good taste you'd go to see it then? :D

    Yep.*

*Although I will pop along at some stage. Just not make a daft dash across town today. Especially as there's beer to be drunk. Now a few quick beers and 'bad taste' nudies would have went down a treat on a wobbly wednesday.

There should be Catalogs at the front near a Box that requests a €1 donation.

I looked, I saw the sign and the box but the only things on that shelf with the box were pages with info of the beginners course.

As Cabansail said - sorry for the lack of catalogues, we'll get that one sorted. Glad you enjoyed the exhibition.

I should have posted this up on the LL to see the response - it could have 'raised' more interest, then again should that be the BGRH or AH fora :D

More Cattle Dogs are on their way to the Library.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with posting threads in the LL, by the way ;) It's how you post rather than what you post, please don't label us all as a bag of militant cats.

I see nothing wrong with a naked lady or man for that matter as a photograph in a library. As long as it's not porn of course.

This place is getting worse by the day. First of all women are being ridiculed as photographers, then we IT people who like photography are being labled as autistic, now this .....

A working .. Australian Cattle Dog is not suited to life alone .. One of the most intelligent breeds, it can become easily bored, leading to serious behaviour problems. These .. need to be part of the action! They are loyal, protective and alert.... Brave and trustworthy. Can be ... trained to a very high level. Firm training from the start and a lot of daily leadership along with daily mental and physical exercise will produce a fine and happy friend ... absolutely loyal and obedient to its master.... They are sometimes suspicious of people and dogs they don't know. It can be very .. aggressive, for its dominance level is high. Problems can and WILL arise with meek owners, and or owners who do not provide the proper amount and type of exercise. This breed does best with a job to do.

Are we now being stereotyped. Does this forum need more moderation :D

Bringing us back on topic, classic nude photography is tasteful and eloquent and can and should be displayed in public places. Sure didn't the romans build statues and painters paint paintings in ancient times, of public orgies of nudity and sure there's nere a word said about them. If you want porn and titillation then there's either the top shelf or the web. However tasteful nudity does have its own place in the art of photography and photographers should be encouraged if they are comfortable, to engage in this teritory.

As for me .... well I've already done my piece for art and tasteful nudity with Spencer Tunick last year and would be proud to hang my image (even if I am a small speck in the crowd) over the mantlepiece

I was educated in France and this question would not arise there, I think.

I find europeans more open to the naked body than the Irish. I recall being over in a local leisure centre in St. Gallen in Switzerland when I was younger, and people just strolling around, some clothed, some not, no one gave a care. As a hot blooded Irish teenager it was feckin great :D

Most of my family holidays over the last ten years have been to mobile home / camp sites around europe with the likes of Canvas or Keycamps, and it's not uncommon to find communal wash rooms.

I think a lot of the Irish mentality of the older generation comes from the teachings of the church, where sex was a sin outside of marriage, and lustful thoughts were a henous crime for which penance and prayer was the only way to redeme yourself.

Thankfully we are coming out of that era, and it's wonderful to see the likes of PT (the photographer in question) being able to display his talant in a public library.

As stated above, I know the picture and the photographer. Those pictures are really nice and pay homage to female beauty.
Message for members of LL - there is at least one picture of naked men - just go to see the exhibition.
I know that it was a little controlled what pictures should be exhibited, but it was more to the technical qualities of the picture and also tastes of the judging body.

Naked men  - I don't recall seeing any of them - not that I'd be looking. Are you telling me that there are de-robed men, subtilly lit and artistically poised, there as well. I'll have to inspect this further by a further visit... mmm. Do you know who the photographer is ? Could TB really be taking her artistic flair to a new height ?

The male nude is by James - you will find it next to the uniformed lady with nice rack.

By the way, I bet that all the photographers displaying nude portraits have signed model releases for their work.

I have a Model release for my nude I had on display last year, but as it's a non-commercial use I don't think they are necessary.
