    Hey

I have a desktop with a number of hard drives connected to it.

I am wondering if there would be a way for a laptop to connect wirelessly/ over the internet / via bluetooth to the desktop to access these hard drives?

I am sorta confused how this would work or if I have the required hardware / software. I know it was what done when I was working in a office. But I assume they used servers etc. I would like to think I am quite an experienced computer user but i have no real experience with anything like this. So if someone could point in the right direction or explain it could work I'd be most appreciatative.

I am using eircom DSL - the desktop is connected using an ethernet connection and the laptop is usually connected wirelessly through a Netopia router.

Any help or advice n what I exactly need. And also if it would be worth doing - would the transfer speeds be reasonable etc.

    Cheers

What youre trying to do is very easy, and doesnt require router tampering. Its File Sharing and its very common on Local Networks.

The help files on your PC will be your best source of information, to save me from going blue in the face :o look up File Sharing, and Workgroups. Read the Help Files from the newest computer (ie. Read the Vista Help Files, as they will be the most up to date, not the XP help files) Change the workgroup name (youll find out how) to something simple, like Home. It avoids confusion later.

In your start bar btw, you should find the option for Help and/or Support.

When I try to access my network places I get an error:

Home is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available.
