His cheekbone was fractured against Crossmolina at the weekend. Out for 2/3 months by the looks of it. Galway will be laughing. Should be clear favourites now.

He got a sneaky belt from behind in the first few mins of a filty match. Crossmolina went out with a plan to take him out and it worked.

Shocking if that's true. The terrible thing is that the guy who hit him will probably be out boasting about what he did. Awful stuff.

If this is the 2nd time the player (if eventually named) is shown to have fractured someones jaw/cheekbone with an off the ball punch what should be done? Extremely lengthy ban from all GAA activities?

Has it been reported that this is the second time the player has been involved in an incident like this?

That would be to easy and soft. I know of 1 case where a lad stumped up €8,000 for a broken nose. The player would not accept the money it was given to charity.
In another case the player made a complaint to Gardai after he had his jaw broke, and it ended in court. The fella who threw the punch was lucky not to go to jail (Judges Words) He paid the lad serious compensation in the early 90s. The man was lucky not to lose his job. The man who threw the punch was actually a peacemaker until he saw a fellow kick another plaer on the ground in a melee and gave him a thump from behind.

This stuff has no place in Gaelic games. Its one thing 2 lads having a slap at each other but this sly stuff is just the pits, Jeasus McGarrity has been through enough without this. Hope he recovers well. Crossmolina should be put out of the championship and the player should not have his membership renewed. Was the player who threw the punch acting under instruction from his manager or coach. It gives everyone a bad name

It seems so. In fact Maughan had the cheek/audacity/gall to say on 'Off the Ball' on Newstalk that it was an 'accidental collision'.

The incident was personally seen by hundreds of people (not including linesman and referee) so it is absolute common knowledge in Mayo football who the thug is, and the fact that it was a deliberate, cowardly act. Hit from behind, and hit off the ball.

    Well done Maughan.

whoever the asshole is should be shunned by his community, not cos mcgarrity is a county player but because its a cowardly sh*t thing to do to any player

This is the type of quote that is so annoying to sports fans. Maughan should be calling for serious action instead of not wanting to upset anyone.

Agree with Tennessee Time, that it is a very cowardly thing to do. McGarritys team mates should withdraw from Mayo panel until this is resolved. Also it might be good for Laurel and Harday (Dessie Farrell and Sean Kavenagh) to come out and call for action instead of looking for money. McGarrity like him or not is a county player and it should be known he has the full support of G.A.A people all over the country.

Well the knock on effect of this is already causing friction in the Mayo camp amongst Ballina and Crossmolina clubmates.

I used to have great time for Maughan, but it seems to me now that he is a bitter man, who has a serious chip on shoulder after Mayo and Roscommon management stints.
Sickened by his reaction to this assault.

btw I have no allegiance to McGarrity, in fact prefer that he's not on Mayo team...but that's a personal point of view all football fans have, fact of matter is no-one deserve the cowardly act carried out on him.

Not only Brian McGuigan there have been others. Up north it is more regualar than down south there have been a few incidents of this in Tyrone and Derry. Look at what happened in Derry a few weeks ago with James Kielth. It is harder up north to control this as all security is from clubs and county boards. At least down south you will have a few Guards at a match.
If there was not so much happening at the moment in county scene imagine the s**t that would have been levelled at G.A.A this week. Ballina should go public on this big time, Oh and Maughan should apologise.
