I had two Macaroon bars today and was very disappointed with them. The chocolate seemed to be a different texture than I remembered and they didn't seem to be as coconutty either. Anyone else notice this or am I just remembering them with rose-tinted taste buds?

Spot on - waxy and tasteless

The only thing that seems to have survived the 90's intact is the cafferys big time bar

It's a bit different from the one I had back in '98 :(

It's also a bit sweeter nowadays, which is bad.

Might be rose-tinted slightly but what brand was it?

Those 10p Macaroon bars were always waxy and tasteless. Awful, awful chocolate - even when I was 8. Same with their Mint Crisps.

I thinks it's Wilsons that made them.

    Wilton Candy it is.
Yeah I know they're not the best chocolate but still loved them, the macaroon much more than the mint crisp.
They're expensive enough these days, about 40cent I think.

There are other brands? Its the ones in paper that are sh*te yes?

Yep the ones in paper are the most common, I do remember one that came in a green plastic wrapper though and it was larger. Haven't seen it in years though.

I got them in a shop in Lucan, beside the motorbike shop, while I was sheltering from a particularly heavy shower of rain.

Theres two newsagents up there and both are like a timewarp. A1 Cash Stores and Ballydowd Stores I think they're called. Used to spend a lot of cash there when in school in Lewkan!

I know that shop, is it true you can still buy two and two bars and 1970's raleigh Choppers there?

There are two shops there. One is really small and pokey, real old school (i.e. a kip) and the other one is a modern convenience store kind of place. I got the macaroon bars in the latter.

Wasn't there actual grated pieces of Coconut in the original bars too?

They don't bring back that childhood feeling any more! :(

Does anyone remember a bar that had clocks on the wrapper? chocolate covered caramel that required a very strong jaw and teeth to get through?

I know what bar your talking about, I just can't remember the name!!!

I remember the chocolate would be all gone long before the caramel!

My Uncle runs a pub/grocery and he use to bring us out Macaroon bars as kids ..only thing was that because of the smokey environment and the paper wrapping it was like eating chocolate tobacco ....but kids will never say no to free choc.:D

Hmmm chocolate tobacco, now how did the tobacco companies marketing departments miss that one, you could have made a fortune on the copyright for that:)

anyone remember the klipso bars!!? eating one of them when i was like 8 and one of my teeth ended up stuck in it!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

The macaroon bars I remember had a white papery wrapper I think with red text and some sort of images on it. Nice bar, coconut bits and chocolate. I think it may have been Swizzle who made the bar.

I had a macaroon bar just the other day and i was sorely disappointed. :(
It didn't taste the same and as another reply pointed out they seem to have gotten smaller.

as in the one with the yellow packet and the bees on!?!?!? Toffee and chocolate?!?!? <3<3

MAcaroons taste the exact same as far as I can tell really. HB ice-cream has utterly changed however.

The new Macaroon bars are carp! They're much drier and tasteless compared to the old one. I don't know what Wilton Candy did to the original recipe but it would be nice to have it back.
