Tiger is the most underrated golfer out there.

He is the greatest golfer, if not most outstanding sportsman of all time. Yes there is a lot of Tiger hype. But for his incredible achievements it should be correctly even more. Modesty and failing to appreciate the extent of his greatness while he walks among us us dazzles from being able to fully give him his due. True recognition will probably not be acknowledged for many years and long after he has retired. We are just too blinded by the light while it shines, to truly appreciate how brightly it is shining.

LOL at the title. If there's one thing Tiger is not, it's underrated. Have you ever watched golf on tv when he's playing? Someone could have a putt for eagle and they'll cut away to a super slow-mo shot of Tiger blowing his nose. The coverage is directed at him almost completely, even when he's not on the course they show the highlights of his round several times no matter how good or bad and when he's not playing they still talk about him non-stop.
He's arguably the greatest golfer of all time but not underrated certainly

There was an article in one of the golf magazines in the last year about a poll of some Pga tour pros and one of the questions asked who was the most underrated golfer on tour. As far as I remember, Woods got most votes followed by Briny Baird.

Tiger...... Under-rated! No. There is no way that he is underrated.....
I do think though, that he is the most incredibly lucky golfer at the most bizarre of times. Now I know there will be a tumble of comments a la "Tiger can't be called lucky" but we all know that there are so many variables that are over looked in ordinary play but he seems to "get" them more often than anyone else.
There are Major winners that can recall the one rub of the green that went there way when winning. I am thinking of the Larry Mizes and Bob Tways of the world that have had it once in their career but just look at how many times Tiger has pulled out an outrageous hole out to put himself ahead or in the frame!
The infamous chip in on 16 in Augusta with DiMarco, The flop in on 15 in the US Open from Us Open rough last year and the eagle 2 from 200 yds out in The Open a few years ago! The four way breaking putt on 17 in Sawgrass.... the list goes on and on!! Its grass! A grain can move a ball off line but he gets the rub oh so often.
I will put it to you this way that poor Greg Norman would have twice his Major haul with half the fortune that Tiger has gotten....

    Opinions?

Don't forget the incident in the 2000 USPGA with the ball re-appearing from behind a rock after about 3 seconds on the 72nd hole

All of these are great shots that would have been close anyway. It's not as if he was holing out after hitting a grandstand or getting a jammy bounce off a bunker after blading a wedge. He does it more often than anyone in history because he's better than anyone in history. We also notice it more because he gets the most coverage.

I will put it to you this way that rich Greg Norman would have 4 times his major haul if he had half the mental strength of Tiger.

He's definitely under-rated. He's doing far better than anyone has before with far more pressure than anyone has had to deal with before.

greatest golfer ever by a country mile. To win so golf events so consistently with the competition he has is unbelievable. Golf is a popular sport today and is just about open to every individual in developed countries. During the nicklaus and palmer periods of dominance, Golf was an elitist sport where very few people had the oppurtunity to play the game. This in my mind just confirms that tiger woods is undoubtedly the greatest player golf has ever seen.

hopefully we'll never have to endure a shot of lowry blowing his nose..
prob doesn't even use a tissue - sleeve of his shirt i'd say

Until he beats Jack's record he cant be called the greatest golfer of all time.

Is too blinkered a measure of greatness. Is Gerd Muller the greatest footballer of all time because he has scored the most official goals? No. Fine player. But not greatest ever.

Tiger is already the greatest golfer of all time. Jack's longevity at the top is very impressive, and Tiger is yet to match him on that point. But longevity does not equal greatness. And for longevity as the undisputed best golfer out there Tiger probably already exceeds him. JN had assorted rivals throughout his career (Palmer, Player, Trevino, Watson) and he never had as clear a superiority over them as Tiger has had over everybody since he launched. Add, in order of importance : the quality of golf that Tiger plays, his majors win rate from starts, his win rate from starts, and his average majors finish, and Tiger for his career to date has maintained a higher peak of excellence than Jack, either over his carrer or for any comparable portion of it.

I don't think Tiger is under-rated. I don't think anybody who knows anything about golf under-rates him. I don't think anybody on tour under-rates him.

He is the best and he sets the standards that everybody else must match. In every tournament he starts as a clear favourite.

Best sportsman of all time.........not for me by a long mile but that's a personal rather than an objective thing.

I agree with you to a certain extent. Im not questioning Tiger's excellence but just pointing out that any sportsman is judged on the majors he has won and i feel its unfair to Jack Nicklaus to call Tiger the greatest of all time until he at least matches or beats his major tally. But in fairness it is only a matter of time!

I definitely wouldn't say his greatness is under-stated.

What has amazed me over the last number of years is his ability to be so successful despite often playing so poorly from tee to green, particularly driving very erratically.

Best golfer alright but his manners and behaviour on golf course leave a lot to be desired. Spitting and foul language and bashing the golf club on ground when he hits a bad shot.
Dont remember Watson, Nicklaus,Palmer or other great players doing any of that. His interviews lately have been disrespectful to interviewees and general public too. Saying he was playing well when it was obvious he wasnt to everyone. Even Ewan Murray got teed off with him at the U.S. Open.

Highest winning percentage's on the PGA Tour:
    Player Percentage (wins / starts)

    Tiger Woods 27.36% (55 out of 201)
    Ben Hogan 20.7% (61 of 294)
    Byron Nelson 17.8% (50 of 281)
    Sam Snead 14.9% (81 of 549
    Jack Nicklaus 12.2% (73 of 594)
    Billy Casper 9.2% (51 of 556)
    Arnold Palmer 8.4% (62 of 734)

phenominal stats and when he passes jacks record the rest as they say will be history, anyone who doubts his position in golf wont have a leg to stand on,
he gets more criticism than he deserves imo

I see he was 7 under after 10 holes of his 2nd round at the Buick Open today. Six birdies, an eagle and a bogey!

Tiger is good at his sport but that doesn't make him a good sportsman. He used to conduct himself properly on and off the course. Now something in him has changed. He is a lot grumpier. Flinging golf clubs around and cursing are not the hallmarks of a sporting legend. He needs to re-learn some manners...
