Hey, I was reading through the threads on here about unlocking an iPhone, and I wanted to know if I had this right.

If I buy a iPhone on 02, on one of their speakesy plans, can I just jailbreak and then unlock it, and then work away with using my VF sim card?

Simple answer is yes. Check out www.iclarified.com for all you need to know on jailbreaking and unlocking.

OP, all of the above is correct, until of course when Apple releases the 3.1 software. When this happens the existing stock will (within a few weeks I expect) start to also arrive with 3.1. Now at the moment the unlock allowing you to use with Vodafone works with 3.0 and I have no doubt that it will eventually work with 3.1, but you might have to wait a few weeks (months) to unlock if you wait much longer before buying.

Ya i was wondering this too - I read that o2 can turn off the ipod function, is that actually possible or is this a scare tactic?

I have the speakeasy iPhone and am happy with o2 for now but would consider this

I unlocked a previously jailbroken 3G with ultrasn0w today; inserted a vodafone SIM; reset the network settings to factory; and rebooted. Surprisingly, it all worked!

    Cool to know, thanks guys.

I had heard the same thing, randomperson 13, but had assumed it was a scare tactic.

I think you're getting confused. What o2 state is that if you leave them, and move 2 another network, only the ipod function of the iphone will work(as it will be locked to 02), and that if you attempt to unlock it and use it on another network, the phone may become permanently unusable .

this is ofcourse, for the most part, rubbish..as the phone can easily be unlocked, with little/no risk.

    O.P

If you can try and get a iphone from Belgium or Italy or Australia then you have no worries about unlocking for other networks (Vodafone) or the phone every re-locking after an update .

The reason is that laws in the above countries state that mobile phones cannot be locked to specific networks so Apple sell "FACTORY UNLOCKED" iphones which will stay network free , will be able to be updated without having the risk of re-locking ,this leaves you with no worries with having to use 3rd party unlocking software .

    Hope this helps .

if you know anyone in Australia you should checkout the Apple Store Australia. They are selling unlocked 16gb 3Gs's for €500

I'm going to back home to Perth for a few weeks and if I knew this I would have held off from buying an 8gb 3G locked to O2.:(
