Argh!! Phantom internet usage.

My iPhone is like a leaky bucket, dribbling away my credit on phantom data usage.

What is going on here? I have email set to manual, location services off and still every day several times a day some kind of phantom internet usage is occurring.

I have push on but this was happening before 3.0 and I am not getting any push notifications at all.

Just got a replacement phone today and it too is doing this. And to top it all off my phone started sending texts to 9011 today.

    Does anyone have any insight?

What kinda usage are you 'leaking', and what apps are you using that might be sneakily leaking it?!

1kb here, 40kb there anything up to 99c and then I could have a few more in the free allowance. I have had this phone for a month and have used probably €20 of this phantom data.
wifi is on when I am at home so this is only happening when the phone is asleep.
    Here are all my Apps.

Do you have your email set up on it?

It must be happening when you're off wireless. Eirtext, iePhoneBook, Weather, or MyBill - any of those will use small bits of data. Outside of home what stuff are you using?

Also - are you on some form of billpay? I get the time and date of every block of data I use itemized on my bill.

Those apps will use data if I use them but data is being used when I am asleep.

I am on PAYG I too get the time and date of data used that's why I know its being used when I am asleep or when I am home (with wifi on) but the phone is asleep.

The Problem though it doesn't tell you what is using the data.:(

could it be your sky+ app?

Man, that is sneaky! No other ideas, I'm afraid, but curious to hear what the outcome is.

Nope cant see how it can be that. It only sends data if I set up a recording which I haven't done for a while.

Have you checked your apps settings to see if they are trying to push information to your handset or if they are using location services?

I have location services turned off and this was happening before push on 2.2.1 version software.

I only have 2 programmes that use push one is tap tap revenge 2 and it never pushed anything to my phone and the other is NotifyMe which I got only today and tried the push feature on it.

I wish there was a way to find out where this data is coming from.:(

I am going to turn push as an experiment.

So its now 17:00 and I will see if any data gets used from now until I wake up tomorrow morning.

Okay so I tuned Notifications off and I will see what happens.

Ok So I just got up and checked my account. Not a single charge since I turned push notification off.

Why is this happening. I am not getting any push notifications when it is on.

Is there any way to set the phone to only use wifi?

    Not in a standard way.:(

I wonder if there is a jailbreak way to keep the wifi awake when the phone goes to sleep.

I turn notification off and I don't get push, I turn it on and it starts dribbling away my credit.

I gather no one is experiencing this?

When you enable Push, your iPhone is sending and recieving very small amounts of data to allow the Push system to operate. If you have a look at some of the Apple Forums and where people are talking about the MS Exchange system, they talk about a "heartbeat", where the iPhone and the server bounce data over and back to keep in communication. The Push system being used by Apple for notifications for Apps, would appear to be similar to that for MS Exchange

It would appear that these small amounts of data, from what you have said so far, is what is dribbling away your credit.

The iPhone expects an "always on" data connection to allow Push etc to work. If you really don't want it sending recieving data, either turn off Push, or for the remainder of your Apps partially delete the APN name i.e. on O2 make "internet" into "interne" (drop the "t")

I understand what you are saying but this was happening on 2.2.1 before Apple implemented push on 3.0.

I had turned off push yesterday evening at 17:00 to see if it would stop this and turned it back on this morning.

Between the times it was off no data was used. As of the time of me typing this post I have enabled it again at 8am and so far no data has been used.

Also the data use is sporadic. It can use data 3 times in as many minutes than none at all for hours then again it will get used maybe once.

here is what I did to manage access to the cellular network usage. It is just a workaround but it works.Phone is 3g running OS v3.0 and is jailbroken and unlocked. ISP is vodafone

Under Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network the setting I have are

    APN: isp.vodafone.ie
    Username: vodafone
    Password: vodafone

    I changed APN to

    APN: isp.vodafone.

The server wont be found and data will not be downloaded. error messages will be displayed if an app tries to download data and you can work out where the data leak is coming from. If you need to use cellular data network then add the ie extension at the end of the APN value and it will work again.

Indeed! I never thought of doing that to find out what is using the data. I shall try it out. Thanks.

Just get 'Bossprefs' and you can turn off 3g and Edge. I think that would prevent a phone from sending and receiving any data via the sim.

I have SBSettings. I have turned off 3G and Edge does it work the same as Bossprefs?

I just got stung for another 99c for 2 data usages. I think I might alter the APN.:(

Haveyou been having problems with unknown data usage as well?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭mad muffin

I have turned edge off and 3G. I tried to download and it wouldn't let me, tried to send an email and it wouldn't let me.

So the internet on the phone is off.

Why And how am I still being charged for data???!!!!!:mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭mad muffin

I altered the APN so as to be unusable and my phone went nuts. There was a constant interference on my computer speakers as if it was trying to upload or download something.

The phone was getting hot and it stopped charging.

As soon as I restored the apn back to normal the interference stopped and the phone started charging again.

    What is going on here.:(

It's near impossible to figure this out on a jailbroken device. There could be a number of apps/services running in the background that could be causing this.

Yeah sitting here thinking about it I imagine it would be a futile task unless I went and installed everything 1 at a time (bollocks to that :D)

But something on the phone was definitely not happy when I altered the APN.

The thought of a virus crossed my mined for a second.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,176 ✭✭✭vinnycoyne

It could just be an app that's constantly polling for updates or pinging a server for stats.

Could be a virus, like you said, but it'd be very unlikely. I haven't heard of any viruses being released, but then again I'm not totally clued in on what's going on with the jailbreak scene these days.

I to doubt it's a virus. I only install certified apps. But how bizarre was it that the phone went bonkers when I altered the APN to be unusable.

I get €10 a moth for 4 months with the new sim so once that's done I will see if I can swap to a clear plan.

I know one thing for sure after that little experiment. What ever it is its bypassing wifi to use data.
