Artists shouldn't be exempt. They earn money, they pay taxes. Simple as. And the amount of artists I know currently on the dole, yet you can bet that if they sell some of their 'pieces' they're not going to go off the dole for a while.

Sorry. I just really really hate artists.

The only exemption is on the works they sell.

Thats to encourage more people to be creative probably.

If they become more popular etc they still need to pay income tax on any money they make that isn't from the sale of their works.

I agree though, once an artist hits the big time and has millions, they should be taxed at the full rate

Yeah Bono, I'm talking to you... pay some tax ya little bollix

charlie haughey brought that rule in at time because he was a lover of arts himself,it is bizzare that even england taxes the artists but we dont, its even well known that the taxman can pick up a fortune from taxing the perfomers concerts here but something we still have to pick up yet, then i guess they wont change the artist tax laws just yet since berties daughter writes a book so she get a tax break, another one is married to a westlife member

I think after an artist earns a certain amount each year they should be taxed. But beginning artists really wont be able to provide for themselves for a while so they need what benefits they can get.

If the "art" they produce consists of everyday objects placed in an "installation" involving no skill whatsoever, or they label their work as "found art" then they should skip the taxpaying part and be sent to a forced labour camp so that they can develop an appreciation of the virtues of hard work. How's that?:)

I thought they brought that in there a while back - caused U2 to move their HQ to Netherlands. I think they are tax exempt up to 250K/year or something??

Artists are only taxed when they're dead, because that's when most of them make their money.

is it drawers or singers we're talkin about?

Its the same! As long as the work has some cultural significance to Irish society (or something like that..)

Artists are an important lure for tourism. And a good catalyst for national pride.

companies are VAT exempt up to a certain limit

maybe do that for Artists with a sliding scale upwards.

only trick is to not make it too high because rich artists would move offshore at the drop of a hat.

99% of artists are crap and never make any money.

Anyone here ever tried making money from the arts? Just curious.
