Im planning on going cycling in italy in the summer and im looking at getting some kind of gps system for the trip.
I would like one that would attach to the handlebars of the bike ideally.
I have very little knowledge of these so all advice is much appreciated.

    Many thanks

Are you looking for something that will show you the route and roads to take? In that case I think the Garmin 605/705 is the only option.

Or you could just bring a map...

Everyone (I literally mean EVERYONE) on here seems to have a Garmin 705. They look really cool, got to play with one down in Kerry. Expensive though, and seem to fall off bikes without some extra tying down.

I love my Garmin 305 when it works ... which is not very often.

I've heard that a lot of this is down to user error. It is very important to install the mount correctly, and the correct way is not necessarily obvious to a bear of very little brain.

edit: FWIW the last time I toured on a bike I used paper maps. It was fun, laying them out in campsites and plotting my campaign across France.

I don't own a Garmin, I'm pretty sure I would know how to install one

Like Astramonti said "F**k the Garmin" in his athenian accent.

hahaha this is becoming really popular :p

I have no problem with the mounting, its holding it good enough. I do have a problem though with the GPS - routing that it does. Its incredibly stupid. It's like a trainer actually, it says.. "so you want to go from city center to citywest.. yes yes i see.. the straight way is 10kms.. but because you suck, i will make you a nice 25kms route just to train... oh yeah, and the way back i 'll send you through the mountains just for the fun of it"

And okay, you decide that you will ignore the proposed route, you have to wait a few minutes-kms for garmin to decide to stop telling you to do a U-TURN and follow his stupid route.

Other than that.. it's a great piece of device that does a lot of nice stuff.

The problem with the mount it the catch on the back. It is very easy to bend out of shape and it is also super easy to push the garmin on and think it is in place when the catch hasn't caught correctly. If guys can get around Flanders without it falling off, then it'll stay put on Irish roads.

I *knew* someone would post that image. Other did do the ride without the cabletie. It just made the photoset.

That image got me a free Garmin replacement after mine smashed on a Wicklow mountains descent.

If i could be so bold to piggy back this thread, im going to the states this weekend and wondered if the Garmin is much better value over there than it would be here? And if so does anyone know good shops to buy it.

Nice going so. Wonder will Garmin fix it in the next update. My guess is the team don't notice much of the crashing as all bar one crash I've had has been while mapping.

I was over there a few weeks ago and I checked Bestbuy and other electrical retailers which had some really good deals in store on the Garmin's including the 705.

Pretty much any electrical retailer seems to stock them so shop around and you'll get a good deal. It was at least 1/3 off in some shop compared to CRC and Wiggle. I didn't notice any good deals on bike stuff and actually got parts from CRC shipped over while i was there as I was able to save on VAT by shipping to US address :)

Just be sure any charges/adapters work on 230v/50hz.
