I recently bought a new commuter and was thinking of trying my old mtb commuter on the Deroroura trail near Oughterard. I need to replace the old slicks with decent off road tyre. Any recommendations? I don't know what the trail is like or what type of tyre to look for.

    hi.

first off what size wheels do you have? 26" or 700c?
    What bike do you have?

get a pair of maxxis advantage xc tyres. 2.1 width.wire bead. dont bother with folding etc.
about €30 locally or €20 online each.

    chainreactioncycles.com

excellent all round tyre that will grip on anything and cheap also.

Also Maxxis High Roller 2.1 - good all-around tyre.

i'd skip the high rollers unless OP is planning some more adventourous XC/DH activities. I think the oughterard track is fairly handy XC with only the midgies to worry about...

The tyres are indeed 26". I'm a lazy biker so Derourra is probably the only trail I'll use. I'll have a look at the Maxxis Advantage. The lbs recommended Panaracer Fire to me at €39.99 each. What is the difference between folding and wire? Pardon my ignorance.
Good to know about the midges, stopped to fix a puncture on a mates bike at Kylemore last weekend and got eaten alive, the bites are still itchy

As I'm changing from 26" X 1.5" slicks(now wrecked after the weekend) I'll need new tubes too, am I being naive or is picking a tube as simple as getting the correct size?

I used Panaracer Fire and latterly Panaracer Trailblasters for years before switching to Maxxis Advantage. All very very good tyres but the Maxxis tyres are much better on wet roots and logs. For that fact alone I wouldn't go back to Trailblasters, plus the Maxxis tyres are cheaper.

Folding tyres are generally better, they have a kevlar bead rather than wire which makes it lighter but more expensive. Also, it folds :) This can be a major advantage if you need to bring a spare tyre with you somewhere. In my experience they also tend to be a little bit easier to get on or off the rim but with any MTB tyre this is not really an issue. For your use I don't think you particularly need a folding tyre.

I've used the 1.5 Continental Tyres out in Deroroura a few times and find them really good out there but no so good on muddy trails. you can get them in Chain reaction for a about 25 each. Have used them in both wet and dry conditions out there.

I use them because they are ideal then for the trek I have to do on road to get to Deroura.

Another good tyre is the WTB's which are usually cheap from Chain reaction as well. From my expierence it is very difficult to get a reasonable priced set of tyres in Galway so i'd recommend Chain Reaction or Wiggle.
