    Folks,

I need some advice. Im heading over to Italy for 5 days at the start of August with my wife. We are torn between Rome and Venice.

Just wondering can anyone recommend or advice which city would be better for 5 days?

    Rome!! Without a doubt.

I did both last year and spent 3 days in Venice and felt it too much. It's beautiful but TBH, kinda boring!!

Rome is my favorite city in the world. Been there 3 times now. Thinking of moving there next year !
So much to do and see you will never get bored. Sit and people watch in the Piazza Navona and you won't want to leave! Also try the pizza place and gelateria to the north of it across from the Irish bar!!

    Enjoy!

rome is the better city with more to see and do but 5 days is a long time

if you go to venice at least you are only a short train ride from verona (day trip) and not that far from the Dolomite Mountains, you would see everything you need to see in venice in about 2 days

Absolutely no contest. Rome. 5 days is a long time? Rome will keep you occupied for months.

Yeah, rome is one of the few cities that you could spend a week in handy enough

gonna go against the general consensus and say Venice . have been to both and found Venice much more enjoyable .

it depends though on what type of holiday your looking for Venice is much quieter than Rome and if your content to wander about the narrow streets at a leisurely pace then Venice is for you .

enjoy your holiday whichever you choose both are awesome :D

I would suggest going somewhere entirely different if you are going in August.

Italy is generally closed in August bar the resorts - its holidays there - also the heat in Rome could be unbearable while the smell and the crowds would be terrible in Venice.

Any other time of year I would suggest both have to be seen at least once in a lifetime !

Yes, the smell in Venice would be pretty unbarable. I recommend going to venice in cooler weather (it shouldn't smell as bad then).

    Have a great time.

    Hi Rossie,
I was in Venice twice, once it was hot & smelly, once cool & not. I assumed the smell was linked to the heat- apparently not.

Yeah, most guides reccommend going off peak to avoid the smell.

I'd say neither. As Robamerc says, both cities will be deserted apart from the tourists, many of the good restaurants will be closed, and the heat might be unbearable. How about going to a smaller city (Siena, say, or Sorrento), or to the countryside (such as Lake Gardsa or the Cinque Terre)?

    Thanks folks,

Looks like its Rome for us!! Got flights more or less sorted with Ryanair so just looking at hotels now.

Leahbaby, where did you stay when you were in Rome? We're looking at the Yes hotel.

I stayed at Cosmopolita Hotel, Via Santa Eufemia. The rooms were small, but it was good value for a 4 star, and in a great location. Don't stay near the Termini Station, not a great area

Italian 4* = everywhere else 3 * at best - so do be careful.

3 star at best? far from it in my experience. I stayed in about 5 hotels, 1 was 3 star and the rest were 4. All were what i'd expect. the room in the rome hotel was very small, that was the only problem. But it was a nice hotel in a good location, in a city where hotels can be fairly pricey.

    Sorry for the late reply.

We rented an apartment!! Much cheaper and better quality IMO.

8 of us rented an apartment 5 min walk from vatican. Cost 1000 euro for the week so it only cost 250e per couple.

Check out http://www.rentalinrome.com/ If you email the agents they will find you somewhere great for your budget. I recommend vatican/piazza navona if possible

Hi to all the guys who have been in Venice, I'm looking for some advice. We (my wife & I) are going there on Aug 14th and we are wondering what is the best way in from the airport. We are staying in a hotel on the Grand Canal (Hotel Principie). We are getting in about 9 at night.
