So I got budget from work to get myself a shiny SSD....and foolishly I assumed that the work laptop had an SATA disk in it, so I couldn't tell from the bios and opened it to check. It's not SATA, but it doesn't look like IDE either.

The laptop is a HP NC6120. Here's the hp.com page but it's inconclusive (to me at least). Anyone know what I should be looking for?

I'd say its IDE, it just has an adapter on it that you should be able to slide off. So you are probably looking for an IDE SSD. You will be able to use the adapter that you slide off on the new drive.

Can you take a picture of the interface?

According to the HP.com page you linked to, the HDD interface is one of two.

    ATA-6

    ATA-7

If you aren't recognizing the interface then I presume it is an ATA-7 connection you are looking at.

According to your page, if you have a 100GB drive in it currently, it will be ATA-6. If it is a lower capacity than that then for some reason it is listed as being ATA-7.

To find it in your link.... Click on Technical Specifications at the top and then scroll down a little way to get to the Hard Drives section.

    Hope that helps.

Thats an IDE drive with an adapter fitted on top, remove the top 2 screws and the adapter should come off easily enough to reveal the standard 2.5" IDE interface for the hard drive beneath.

Cheers. I did try removing the two screws last night but didn't want to balls up the interface.

IDE SSD's are few and far between these days. I wonder if it would be possible to buy an SATA interface like that one.

I dont think there exists an SATA interface like that unfortunately, I'd love to find a laptop SATA Drive -> IDE connector to breath some life into my older laptops which have palty drive sizes. You can get larger IDE hard drive but at a huge cost unfortunately. IDE SSD drives are few and far between as well I believe.

Well, I ended up going with this one. Very difficult to find 64G IDE SSD's. Fairly moderate read / write speeds, but the removal of seek times should really help. Also, my company's paying for it.

That SSD might be an awkward fit as its not a standard 2.5" drive. It was intended for the IBM X41 Tablet laptop as it has a 1.8" HDD form factor (I know, I own one!).
I think the IDE connector runs down the side of the drive, not the top as on a standard IDE drive so it might not fit into the laptops HDD bay. Just be aware of this!

Nice one. Thanks. I had assumed it was short on length and not width. :( I'll ask memoryc before they ship it.

The guy in memoryc.com sent me the dimensions and it sounds like it should fit. It's at home anyway so I'll let you know.
