Been training for marathon for 3 weeks, my knee is killing me. Got fitted for runners so don't think they are the problem. It's only one knee so am worried there might be something serious wrong with it.
    Any tips welcome, thanks.

Well if you are training for the marathon you must be pushing yourself fairly hard. Relax, take a few days off, if your knee is bad now it will get worse if you keep pushing yourself you could blow it out and get seriously injured. It could be how you are landing on your foot, if you are hitting the ground and jarring your knee that could be causing serious problems. I sometimes kinda take a few steps on my toes so that is bad. I try and make a conscious effort to land properly. Maybe nip into the pharmacy and see if they have some proper support for it? Slow down on your next run (after taking a break). Maybe mix it up with some cross training like cycling which doesn't jar the joints, or strength training. Are you running every day? Did you get it fitted or did you get gait analysis? I take it they gave you your foot type as well (i e norma, flat foot, over arch, your tendency to pronate or otherwise)

Get it checked out by a physio - may be a simple remedy such as needing extra support, or doing particular stretching exercises.

Thanks guys, went to a physio yesterday and she told me I muscles need strengthening and lengthening. It's really frustrating I was really enjoying it and now I can get out at all. I live in a hilly area and she said running down hills probably did the damage, I never even knew it could. Hopefully a few days rest will help

Try doing something like pilates, that helps lengthen the body and strengthen the core, and its low impact on legs! All you need is a carpeted area (or a very fluffy towel to lie down on!) and a book from the library or instructional clip from the internet!
Don't worry, you nipped it in the bud and you know now what to avoid next time you are out running! You will out in no time! :)

Thanks for the tip messygirl, I got some stretches to do from the physio so will look up some pilates moves to incorporate with them.

I was also advised to take seven seas joint care (contains glucosamine and chondronitin) to help the joints, has anybody any experience of these?

Also do experienced runners think using a tread mill for some training might be helpful?

    Thanks again for the tips!
