Did he buy it though work? Does he have a receipt? How did he pay for it - cheque? There has to be a record somewhere.

They will charge a re-issuing fee of about €12 per month remaining.

If he got it through work then he needs to get a letter from his employer saying that he lost his ticket to give to them when applying. There's a fee per month unexpired on the ticket but this should be capped at €100 if I'm not mistaken. That's what it cost me when I had to get a second one back in May.

If it's under the taxsaver scheme the company must have a record of it for tax reasons, and you should be able to get a replacement.

If it's an annual short hop bus+rail it's €12 per month remaining - as mandz said I think that's capped at 100. I lost mine late June last year ago, waited until July and paid €72 to replace it, though I had to get a letter from work too.

If it's an annual point to point, non-taxsaver ticket I don't know what the story is, there's nothing on the website. But given the system they have Irish Rail can't cancel the existing one and will probably do nothing to help you.

If they do insist on paying full whack for a replacement (or for monthly's)
might be worth checking if the lost ticket is covered under your house insurance.
