Once the groin guard is made of Hard durable plastic with the straps it'l be alright and you could get a decent one for €15.

IMO steel is the only way to go - if you are really concerned about your valuables ;)
    http://www.fightstuff.co.uk/catalog/twins-black-groin-protector.html
might be a bit dearer, but lasts forever and you can't get anything better/tougher

    Thanks a lot guys!
I'll go with the steel one...

well, for sure the most important thing is how you feel wearing it and if it provides enough possibilities for movement
steel cups might not be the most comfortable for some people - after all it is just 3 ropes cutting into your 'bottom parts' :D:D, but my knowledge only comes from muay thai, and here there are a must (they won't even let you fight with a different type - at least not in Thailand)
but if it feels really uncomfortable and limits your flexibility there's no point not getting different one

I find my shock Dr. great for Muay thai! Now Im thinking steel cup in the compression shorts could be the way to go! To the workshop! :D

Shock Doctor do a steel cup called a Titan cup (I'm sure this is the one Mark has), you can use it with their compression shorts (that already have a flex cup) or with the Under Armour 0025 compression shorts that are made to hold a cup.

If you're interested Fightlord have them in stock or you can pick one up from the shop in our school, I have a few here....

The biggest problem with steel is tieing them. if the chord comes loose the damage can be worse, as anyone who was at MMA league Dublin will tell you :(. Might get me some of those compression shorts and stick my steel cup in.

MMA is different type of sport, coz of all the ground game, you'll probably be better off with the cup with shorts I guess
for muay thai the steel one is fine enough, you usually get knocked down fast enough, so no need to worry about the laces :D:D

Danrho make a groin guard with a rigid plastic cup & elasticated waistband.
    It comes in S, M & L sizes
Lots of judo players use them
We have them here at the Dublin School of Judo www.dsj.ie
