    Howya lads,

sister bought a 1998 Ford Ka, and it appears that in the last hour, the head gasket has gone bam.

its the 1.3 chain driven engine, any ideas on how much this should cost to change from a good mechanic?

Pretty sure the head wont need to be skimmed as it was turned off very quickly, and i dont think much damage has been done at all.

Is this one of the Ka`s that has a temperature guage on the dash or just a light?

If its the one with just the red overheating light then Im afraid you might not get away with a head gasket only. The reason Ford put the guage in the later models was because once the light comes on it usually means the damage has been done ie that the car has already overheated whereas the guage let you know if it was overheating earlier than the red light only setup.

They're a bit of a pain to strip down but any decent mechanic should be able to sort it out reasonably enough, I just rebuilt the engine on my Ka rallycar which also overheated last time out, Problem was that the light didnt come on til the car was at 105 degrees!!!!

Oh and if he engine overheated its a no brainer not to skim the head, Costs a few quid extra but if it is warped a bit or cracked it'll all be spotted before it goes back on the engine and has to be stripped down for a second time!!!! The cost of the labour then will be big as it wont be noticed till the car is running for a little while after the repair.

If your looking for a head I have a decent one here off the engine that came in a spares ka I bought a while back..
