    Hi there,
looking to get into a bit of mountain biking and my company have signed up the bike to work scheme. I haven't a clue about bikes though in the main, brands etc. Would be looking to spend around 500 or 600 yoyo's on it. I'd be looking for a mountain bike because would use it for commuting but would also like to go down to ballyhoura as well and get into it.

Has anyone any suggestions on good bikes on line or else in bike shops around limerick? i'd imagine online would be cheaper?

    Thanks!

    Specialized Hardrock, something like this.

It won't be fast on the road, but you'll learn to suffer, and that is the most important skill in cycling.

Is that 500-600 after the discount? in that case you should be looking at bikes around €1000. With the discount it will work out at around €600.

I'm going to spend a little over €1000 on one myself and probably go for a cube on Chainreactions.

I meant to ask that actually. What discount will I see? looking at a bike for around 600 in total, then take off the discount?

In the bottom left of this page there is a calculator: http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/bike2work.asp

It should tell you what you should expect to save.

thanks, wont be saving too much with my tax bracket I see. Keep the suggestions on bikes coming if ye can, haven't a clue!

edit: actually a full suspension bike prob wouldn't be great for cycling to work would it and I wouldn't get a decent one for the money I'm talking?

Well I was considering a hardtail, not full sus. I'm no expert to be honest seeing as it will be my first proper MTB.

From your original post it seems you want to get into MTBing as a sport. I've been told one has to spend a reasonable amount to get a bike thats gonna be up to the terrain, but i'll let one of the more knowledgeable guide you.

Edit: Something like Focus Fatboy? Again, someone else would have to tell you if its any good.

BeOnes on chainreactioncycles.com are good value in that price range. Do a search through the forum as well, there's one particularly good thread where kenmc went through a few different potential bikes and settled on a merlin malt from merlincycles.co.uk
