my laptop is 3 yrs old. its a hp pavillon something or other. basically it wont turn on!!!! when i press the on button the blue lights on the keyboard light up, i can hear the computer itslef preparing to load, and then BEEP BEEP BEEP.. it makes three beeps and then the 'loading' noise stop. also, the screen stays completely blank all the time. last week it was the same, except, if i turned it off and on it wold eventually load up and turn on, plus there was no beeping.

have i completely ****ed it up?

theres no reason it should have done this like, i didnt let it fall or anything.

should i bring it to a technician, or is it a lost cause?

if it is, can someone please please recommend me a laptop, preferably good price, with a nice screen. and the same memory or even a little less than mine. im nearly certain this is it - minus the web cam (if that is a web cam..)

Sounds like its very possible that the memory chips (RAM) may have become dislodged from its slot, or indeed that the RAM may be failing. A few BIOS beeps when you turn it on- without anything on the screen- sounds like the RAM to me. If this is the case- its easily sorted.

really? i crossing fingers and toes now that that is all it may be. how do the chips become dislodged. you'll have to excuse my ignorance, im not very educated in the computers department.. would all documents be wiped off etc? i have most stuff backed up, but thave a few things that arent. thanks for reply

You need to find out what the beeps mean. You still got the manual?

EDIT: Those beeps can mean anything, if it was RAM it could do anything. Your data is fine. I can't imagine it being lost, it can 100% be recovered.

EDIT AGAIN: Whats the full name of the laptop?

check your beep code with the table here.

Find out your Bios manufacturer - easily done as when you first turn on your machine the bios comany logo is usually the only thing in colour at the top of the screen.
Not sure but think HP use Phoenix BIOS.

You really should bring it to someone who is in a position to test it for you- if you're comfortable with doing some detective work yourself.

There are two things that tend to go- the RAM or the graphics card. One is replaceable, the other not. Your hard-drive is secure and all your files on it are not affected by this.

Ring HP with the model and serial no- and they will be able to tell you the exact meaning of the beeps (duration and number of beeps)- and what your options are.
