    Hi,

I'm selling the motor and I've found a buyer. He wants to get the car RAC/AA inspected which is cool and the gang.

Question is, anyone know anywhere in the Kildare area where I can get this done? AA said I have to bring it to the Naas Road. Haven't called RAC yet.

    Cheers,
    K

I don't think the RAC are in business in Ireland any more. www.rac.ie redirects to Hibernian Aviva's insurance website, and there's no mention of vehicle inspections.

Cartell (http://www.cartell.ie/moreinfo4star.jsp) also do an inspection service, but it doesn't look as detailed as the AA's - not sure of their locations (I assume they have mechanics contracted around the country to do it for them or something like that).

thanks lads. Just called Larry at inspectacar and he seemed very genuine. He'll come to my location. He used to work for the AA. I'll send his details on to the buyer and see what happens.

I'll also check cartell - thanks phutyle.

Just looking a the market prices for a vehicle inspection.

    http://www.carsireland.ie/pre-sale-car-inspection-service-dublin.html
    99 Euro

    http://www.inspectacarorvan.com/prices.html
    99.50 Euro

    http://www.aaireland.ie/vehicle-inspections/essential-form.aspx
The AA used to have a price of 303 Euro Ex VAT for a pre-purchase inspection but have taken down their prices from the website.

    Hey E39MSport

Did you end up using inspectacarorvan? Or has anyone else used this particular service? Were you happy with the service?

As mentioned on other posts the AA seems pretty expensive for a vehicle inspection.

I need to get one done in the next couple of days. Any other recommendations?

    Thanks

    Hi,

Nah, didn't use them. The purchaser thought that he was a 'waffler' and wanted to go with the AA. to be fair, given the money he was spending, I didn't blame him.
However, I thought that Larry at inspectacar sounded like he knew his stuff. he did go an a bit though but that's not always a bad thing.

Used inspectacarorvan about 3 weeks ago to do a pre-purchase on a BMW 318ci. Didn't give as thorough an inspection as expected and this lead to a failed NCT a couple of weeks later (front suspension bushes and links). Overall a disappointing service for the money spent.

To be fair, bushes etc can be marginal and open to opinion as to whether they are still serviceable or not. Nobody can give a definite answer as to whether something will pass or not except the NCT tester on the day.
Did this guy have access to a car lift when doing the inspection?
In any event, I would think the inspection is more to stop you buying a cut and shut than preventing you buying a car that needs typical wear and tear items replaced.
An inspector should without doubt be able to give a good idea as to the overall condition of a car, whether its had any crash damage, major paint work, is in dangerous condition etc. He should also be cross checking all documentation against chassis number etc and also I figure doing a history check as part of his service.
Overall, if he had a lift, he should have noted wear to bushes but it imo, in the grand scale of costs of running an old 3 series coupe, replacing a few bushes for an NCT is a minor detail.

Good response in fairness. Mechanic did have access to a lift, so presuming if there was wear and tear to a degree that would've failed the NCT it would've been spotted. Granted it's not a major fix, but still wishing it was spotted before I handed over the final payment to the garage. Looking at €100 for repair and €28 re-test which is still a net loss on the purchase price. Also, car has covered approx. 300 miles since last NCT yet this issue was never picked up. Shinning example of NCT test standard inconsistency?

    You bought from a garage?
You should have got them to test it.
