GPS trackers

    Hi guys,

Just wondering what is the least you could expect to shell out on a semi-decent GPS watch/tracker for jogging etc? I was looking at the Garmin Foreunner 50 for €99.99. How does it rate compared to the more advanced models?

Ideally i would like something that could tell me time, distance, pace and be able to map my run for me afterwards. From what i can see the Forerunner 50 will do the first three, but not map the run.

Are there any other brands/models that could do all the above for decent value? And what is the minimum i could expect to spend to get all the above.

    Thanks

The Garmin Forerunner 50 is NOT a GPS tracker. It does not include any GPS functionality. It can calculate pace from a foot pod, as long as it is accurately calibrated that is, but you'll never get any positional data that way.

    Personally I'd go for a better model (in fact I did - I bought a 305 18 months ago)

Buyer beware on ebay of course. There are lots of "refurbished models" floating around, where you don't get any form of warranty.

I agree you do have to be aware but just check the persons rating and what other people said about them.

Alot of sport shops sells them on ebay!

Also, calling them a tracker suggests that satellites are in some way 'tracking you', which isn't the case. They are 'GPS receivers'. They receive satellite data, and the watch itself calculates where you are. The watch doesn't send out any kind of signal.

eBay is one of your best bets, or purchasing from the US, if you know anyone travelling over there. I've bought from Sustuu before on eBay, and they seem to be a Garmin approved stockist (or so they claim). My experience was good. I have nothing to do with this seller, I just had a good transaction.

I'm not sure about that model, but I bought the Garmin 405 (About €240 on Amazon) and it's great. It monitors heart rate, pace, elevation and distance.

It's pricey, but as I train by myself quite a bit, I find it a good monitor of how i'm progressing. I also push myself a bit more now that I have accurate data on my pace and distance.

Thanks. Will suss them on ebay, they look very pricey to buy offline.

Do you find they are good value for money, compared to say a stop watch and mapmyrun?

The best thing about them is they're a one time investment, and will last you a long, long time. I use mine for cycling, running, hiking, racing, geo-tagging, etc. My OH also robs my 405 and uses it for her running (but never recharges the battery - Grrrr).
