Cyclocross bike versus HT MTB or Hybrid

    Hi All.

In the process of using the Cycle To Work Scheme to get myself a second bike. I have a Giant SCR 4 at the moment for going on the road, but i do a fair bit of cycling around Dublin, and i was thinking of getting a MTB to bum around on.

I've had a couple of different types of bikes before ( Specialized Sirrus, Trek MTB), but i just can't decide on what to get to accompany my road bike.

Don't do a huge amount of trail stuff, but i'm 6'3 and 16.5 stone, and the roads around are pretty bad and cycle tracks useless.

Narrowed it down to Specialized Tricoss Sport, Specialized CrossTrail, or a Specialized Hardrock with a pair of slicks if needs be.

any suggestions ( budget is 1000e)

    Thanks

test spin them all and see which fits you the best tbh.

I have a hard rock comp myself: overall it's a good beginner xc bike, it's stable on the slow speed stuff but is plenty agile without being too twitchy. Frame is fairly light and it does come with an entry level rock show dart 2 so the fork should last me a while.

The only downside to the bike is that it has mountings for disk brakes on the frame and fork, but not on the hubs... It will prob be a lot cheaper for me to sell it on at a later date then try upgrade wheels/brakes tbh.

If you are going for a hardrock and you def are going to go off road I would def go a step up and get the disk brake version.

I have just gotten slicks for it yesterday and they do make a bit of difference for road cycling: it is a lot easier to get going from a dead stop at the traffic lights and I am hitting the harder gears easier. You def won't be breaking land speed records on this bike to say the least though.

If you are not going to go off road the hardrock is prob a waste even with slicks, the crosstrail or the tricross might be more what you are into. Again I would try get a test cycle on each and see which suits you the best comfort/geometry wise.
