Guess Ryanair's next scheme

It seems that every week, the god that is Michael O'Leary comes up with another odd-ball announcement.:D

There's a strong possibility that next week, passengers will be strapped to the wings, and also take turns flying the plane to reduce costs.

    http://www.independent.ie/travel/travel-advice/ryanair-to-make-passengers-stand-1808116.html

Ryanair is considering proposals to make some of its customers stand during flights.
The low-cost airline would charge passengers less on "bar stools" with seat belts around their waists.
Michael O'Leary, the chief executive, has already held talks with US plane manufacturer Boeing about designing an aircraft with standing room.
He is now seeking approval from the Irish Aviation Authority before ordering a new fleet of carriers, according to The Sun.
A Ryanair spokesman told the newspaper: "If they approve it, we'll be doing it."
Mr O'Leary is reported to have got the idea from the Chinese airline Spring, which has put forward similar plans. It estimates space could be made for up to 50 per cent more passengers and costs could be cut by 20 per cent.
It is not the first time Ryanair has come up with a controversial proposal for cutting costs. Earlier this year Mr O'Leary suggested passengers could be charged £1 to use the on-board lavatories.
In an interview on BBC television he said that the low-cost airline was looking at the possibility of installing a coin slot on the lavatory door so that "people might actually have to spend a pound to spend a penny."
Mr O'Leary also considered introducing a "fat tax" for overweight passengers.

I think Id prefer to sit on a bar stool than squeeze myself into their normal seats.Might be a bit more leg room!!

China's Spring Airlines is in a bit of a pickle. The air carrier has enjoyed a steady increase in passengers since its start in '05 thanks to low fares (which means next to no complimentary in-flight amenities), and now its fleet of 13 planes can't handle all the prospective customers. The airline already has 14 new jets on the way, but that's not enough, officials say.

The solution? Make passengers stand! Well, not completely, but close enough. "It's just like bar stools. The safety belt is the most important thing. It will still be fastened around the waist," Spring Airlines' Zhang Wuan told China's CCTV. The new arrangement, according to Spring Airlines, would allow 40% more passengers on every flight and help reduce the carrier's cost by up to 20%, which would in turn lower fares.

Spring Airlines president Wang Zhenghua may even want to take the idea further, after talking with China's vice premier, Zhang Dejiang. "He suggested that, for a lower price, passengers should be able to get on a plane like catching a bus, with no seat, no luggage consignment, no food, no water, but very convenient," Mr. Zhenghua said.

That kind of reasoning is entirely opposite to most airlines, which seek to recoup losses through luxury services and optimized routes while still providing comfort. Still, it's just a proposal for the time being. Spring Airlines wants to submit its plan by the end of the year.

This is nothing new. Reported on boards.ie a few weeks back in Travel & Holidays.

The chinese are currently trying to have this passed by their government safety gurus so we will see soon.

    Check them out boarding trains.

Ryanair have flown 60 million passengers over the last 12 months, so they're obviously doing something spot-on.

In fact, they will increase passenger numbers by 10 million this year from 57 million in 2008 to 67 million in 2009.

I guess that this initiative would allow them to introduce First Class and Business Class somewhat along the following lines ...

First Class - A seat and a voucher for lavatory use.
Business Class - A stool and class two lavatory voucher (No 1's only)
Comfort Class - Standing at the rear of plane with railed buttock support provided free.

People sit quite comfortably on bar stools for hours on end, why would it be such a big deal on a 1 hour flight?

I'd nearly be enclined to pay more to sit on a bar stool. I hate being crammed into plane seats. :D

Sounds like a good idea tbh..

    I bloody love Ryanair.
Everybody seems to bitch about the lack of included services ect..

But I think Micheal O'Leary actually wants to give everybody free transport.
He'll make the money off you on the food / baggage / extras
And if it's cheaper just to sit on a barstool in a plane for 3 hours I'd do it.
    Probably more leg room anyway..

    Micheal O'Leary for Tíosach!!

If O'Leary reads this I'm guessing passengers will be required to carry a tool kit when flying (or in Ryanairs case a roll of duct tape & a big feck off hammer!)

Ok ok, Im always flying with Ryanir. A good way of making money is be sticking in phone chargers into the seats. €2 for a an hour or charging. Awesome.

The above idea was created today 6th July 2009. If it is published anywhere, I own the rights to it.

If it lowers the cost of he flight or stops it raising with all the others due to petrol prices then I bloody hope so.

People are too spoilt by airlines over the last few years.
All of these things we take for granted and bitch about loosing became the norm back when flying was super expensive and exclusive.

You want bus type prices for flights to other countries?
Be willing to accept bus type service and stop bloody moaning about it.

Edit: Sorry everyone if my posts today are hostile.. Giving up smoking is NOT working out well :o

Im friggin nervous enough as it is, flying Ryanair... just imagine an extra 50 people jammed on board in the name of reducing flying costs... what happens the inflight service? What about weight distribution? I thought the baggae handlers were the only people authorised to load the plane.. is there not a correct proceedure to doing this? I might just quit flying and be done with it...

Typical, Michael O'Leary comes out with some silly idea that will never be implemented, and every news source in the country laps it up and gives Ryanair the publicity it's after.

It's on breakingnews.ie too BTW. BREAKING NEWS.

F*cking retards. I'm taking breakingnews.ie off my iGoogle now, absolute goons.

I haven't listened to the radio today, but I'll bet both my testicles that Newstalk is running this story also, just like when they spent weeks following that 'pay to use the toilet' idea -- and they also reported in their news bulletin when Ryanair were running a poll on their website looking for more creative ways to charge customers, etc.

Is there really nothing else to be reported in a 3 minute news bulletin?

Fat tax still wont stop fat people being on the bloody plane. I'd fly anywhere, once i get a seat by the emergency exit, more room. If i dont get that, i'm ****ed.

Maybe O'leary should fly the planes himself?

It is in operation in America now, saw on some sh1t airport programme a person being charge as they we a PES (passenger of excessive size)

The way it worked was that they had to buy a second seat at check in, but the money would be refunded if there were any empty seats on the plane when it took off

plan....treating customers like they paid money for the tickets and not treat them like sh1t as if they were doing them a favour though you will never fly with ryanair without parting with a good chunk of euros.. never... i hate this airline:)

Sorry for a little off-topic but it's the best place to include my proposal for Mr Michael O'Leary. Please consider removal of security checks for Ryanair flights. Personally I hate that and I'm willing to take a little bit more risk and fly cheaper without them. There should be a choice of flights with or without security checks... If someone doesn't have balls then they can pay a little bit extra for a more secure flight.

Ryanair's next cost-cutting measure will be to introduce a great big catapult that will lauch you in the general direction of the city you wish to travel to.

A typical fare from Dublin to London will be just €5. Optional extras include a parachute (€129.99 for those under 90kg, €159.99 for those 90kg - 120kg).

Ryanair cannot guarantee you will land within 20 miles of your destination. What will also remain the same as current Ryanair travel, your baggage will cost approximately 5 times the cost of your hotel.

With a man like O'Leary you could expect him to self-insure the planes and in case a plane overruns a runway or something he'll expect the passengers to pay up for the damages because they were too heavy or something :p
