Sickness payment and returning to work part time?

Does anyone know if there is anyway for someone to return to work on a part time basis and still be allowed to claim sickness benefits for the days they are unable to work? I know of someone that is currently out of work full time and claiming social welfare benefits which are paid to their company. They are trying to get back to work and but would be unable to do a full working week. Does the system cater for this?
Had a look on a few sites and cant see this situation mentioned. Im thinking its probably not catered for. Thanks in advance.
