Kayano 14 vs Kayano 15

I'm looking for some advice re these shoes, I want to buy a pair for my boyfriend as his are getting VERY worn and they are the kayano 14. I can't ask him to try shoes on or else he just won't let me buy them and I want it to be a surprise. He has had his others for over a year (may 18 months). There is a hole on the top of one set and he is doing the marathon in Dublin in October so he needs new ones, and I can't find a supplier of the kayano 14, so basically my question is are the 15's different or are they the same? hearing different reports. He has a flat foot and is heavy on shoes and runs about 40km on average a week (usually more) and sometimes gets sore around shins. Any opinions gratefully accepted!

I have the 14's and they are a gret shoe ...will get them again.
from what i read the 15's are supposed to be better, but they are really expensive at the moment as they are only out a while.
Try ebay...you could be lucky there.

I've had two pairs of 14s and find them great.

Bought the last pair on Ebay a few months ago.

I bought the 15s but don't wear them as they don't have enough arch support for me :(.

from a guy's perspective would ye care about the colour? He has the blues but the only ones i can track down online are like gold and silver and not sure if he would care and dont want to let the secret out!

re arch support yeah i dont want to get him the wrong shoe, i wouldnt mind spending the extra cash if it meant he got the best one out there!

Wouldn't be worried about colour myself as long as they're not black!

Have mostly always worn Kayanos, the 15's, IMO, are definitely the most comfortable version yet... I intend to stock up on them if the price comes down when version no. 16 comes out! Fantastic shoe

I used to have the Kayano 14's and bought the 15's there last week. Was having bother finding the 14's aswell so just went for the 15's. Most places seemed to offer either the red or gold ones but i found an online store that offers the blue ones (im picky when it comes to colour :() -

Store is great and prices are very reasonable, have bought stuff from them a few times and have never had any bother.

wicked keep the advice coming! :D one question, the arch support can someone explain that for me please? Himself would be running on a mix of road, track and fields and he is fairly heavy on shoes and has flat feet and would the arch support be very important regarding this? Thinking now I might get the 15's if there is more cushioning, don't mind about the cost so might buy it in a normal store and that way if it doesn't work well for him I can return it....

What about getting him a voucher for a running store? That way he could have a gait analysis done and proper fitting. He might even find another brand that suits him better.

Had the the last few kayano's and needed to buy a new pair recently. So naturally, having had such a good experience with the last models I tried on the 15s - I couldn't believe the difference. I found the arch support to be radically different and the shoe felt very narrow. Ended up searching for another set of 14's off ebay.

edit. Just noticed the OP said her partner had flat feet and had shin pains. I'm questionning whether he should be using Kayanos as they're designed for over-pronators.

Its a bit tricky because he is living in England at the moment and I can't remember the name of the shop he got them in, something I might try and think about... I thought it would be fairly easy but its turning a lot harder! :p I would prefer to get him the gift as a surprise and then let him exchange it as he would like. He would put it on the long finger as well so its kinda like it would be easier for me just to buy them and give them to him and let that be it,

see thats what i read in one review but when i rang a few stores they were all like "no its just a cosmetic difference"

think i will just go with a pair i found on the net

    www.whirlwindsports.co.uk
still have them in stock at 90pounds sterling, will get them delivered to his work address. He has rather wide feet really,

I think he gets shin splints, i know he got the gait analysis done and got fitted for them in a special shoe shop and they used the threadmill thing and everything, and he does have flat feet.

It's for the women's version but this is pretty much how i felt.

    http://drshoe.wordpress.com/2009/01/15/shoe-review-gel-kayano-15-vs-14/

Again, I thought they were radically different.

I bought a pair of black and silver 15's in NY a few months ago - they haven't come off since...use them for everything.

Can you return the shoes? yeah the reviews are a bit dodge. :o

I think i might just do that now that you've found the 14's. Looks like i'll be running in the old pair again tonight so

better than trying them out and finding they are wrecking your feet and not able to run in them!

So consensus is let him get a new pair with gait analysis (and ruin the surprise) or go with the previous version he is happy with?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 911 ✭✭✭Flying Abruptly

If you could get the voucher made specifically out for the gait analysis and the runners it would basically be the same thing as getting the runners, wouldnt think it ruins the suprise - maybe wrap it inside an asics runners box:D There's always something good about getting something new/different (thats if the gait recommends a diff. pair) and knowing that it suits you perfectly.

Well it seems the kayanos 15 aren't the exact same so will probably just go ahead and order the 14, he used to have a different pair and they were all wrong and he has never had any problems with the kayanos, might try and wrangle it out of him where he got the last pairs and book him in for gait analysis and send him the voucher alright, just thought it would be so nice for him to arrive in work and for there to be a package on his desk and the surprise when he opens it! :) its about 5 months early for his burthday present but would like him to have them broken in for the marathon...

I'm in the 15s at the moment, they are fine for <10 miles, but I think I'll need to find stiffer shoes as by the end of the half I didn't think they were supporting me enough. I miss my 14s, they died about 3 weeks ago :(

the kayano 15 red colour is now 112.50euro in elverys dundrum as prob in every othr elverys they also have the newest version of the 15 jus in at 140euro in a blue colour. Dundrum also have got in the asics 3010 which i never came across b4 but it is very similar to the kayano with a bit more support n the forefoot i tried them on in store and found them very comfortable and just as nice a fit as the kayano.
re the difference in the 14 and 15 it is mostly cosmetic in my opinion most people feel the difference as their 14's have molded to their on foot and a new shoe is always going to feel slighty different until it is worn in. AGain that is my opinion not gospel.

Disagree here, I tried on a new pair of 14s last weekend (amazingly enough, somewhere still has a womens size 7 here - but I can't afford them right now!) and wore my 15s that night (which have ~60-70 miles on them) and the 14s were definitely a lot stiffer.

I had 14's and i got a hole in the toe, i was chatting to the guy in the shop and he reckons that happens once every hundred or so pairs, it looks bloody awful!
I'm on the 15's at the mo tho and they feel lovely on the feet.
Depends on the person, but i'm sure if you buy the bf a 14, 15 or a voucher for a gait analysis he'll be well impressed!
If twas me i'd love the voucher for the gait analysis so that you know for sure what you're foot is doing and what' the right way to get the best out of your running.

I have been using the Kayano for the last 4/5 years. I upgrade every summer at the Arnotts sale and get two pairs to see me through the year. Bought the 14 on the Arnotts sale a few weeks back for just €100.

Was in Champion Sports in Jervis on Saturaday on the 15 is on sale for €99 down from €150. Nearly dropped when I seen them, Champions sales are usually rubbish as they generally use it as excuse to clear out any junk they have left.

I presume that offer would be in all Champion stores.

Haha that's mad! Himself has holes in his runners too. I'm mostly afraid he will injure himself in old shoes so hopefully this will work! Cheers for all the advice, I'm just going to take the plunge and order them,

anyoone know if there is a diff between the kayano 15 red and gold colours? i guess there isnt other than colour of course ?!
arnotts have the gold' colour ones.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 211 ✭✭messygirl

didnt have them in blue so told himself what i had planned to do as a really cool surprise and told him to go ahead and get fitted and i would pay, he is delighted! :) He thought the 14's were the same as the 15's so had to enlighten him,

regarding the colour i think it is just a choice! the structure of the shoe is the same,
