Help naming a book

Some time ago (2-3 years) I read a preview of a book within another. I think it was a chapter of a modern American author.

As the author writes he invents his own syntax - with different symbols being added to mean a particular emotion/idea. After introducing the symbol it becomes widely used throughout the text. i.e. he defines  and then it becomes a part of his writing.

Any idea of author or title?
