Hi,I bought a car from England a few years ago that had a private plate for example G1 GoG could this be worth anything? or do I even have any claim to ownership of the registration I have no documents for it.

The person i bought if from was a cab driver in London who buys and sells cars on the side he asked me could he hold onto the reg I told him ill hold onto it thinking at the time it might be worth something.Probably more than the car:o

How can I find out if I own it? and cud it be bought by a UK resident and put back in the DVLA system?

    Any thoughts are welcome

    Thanks.

Since you exported it with the personal plate on it, you no longer own it, to the best of my knowledge.

I would have thought that the cab driver still owns the plates. Say, for example, that reg, say GI GOG is registered by him, in his name, then any car he owns, he would transfer those plates onto it?

I would think that transferring the plates into your name would be a separate job, and would not be included in the swapping over of ownership of the car.

I don't see however, how you leaving the country with the plates means you no longer own them? I don't see how you owned them in the first place. :)

    Not quite.

If the cabbie was keeping the number he would have to get it removed from the car before selling it and get a new number issued. This is not a fast process as it involves a trip to the local DVLA office. If he simply sold the car as is then he sold the number with the car.

If you reregistered the car here the number is no longer yours and the DVLA are free to reissue it to the highest bidder.
