I have a mate in Aus, and over there the iphone 3gs can be bought from the apple store online totally unlocked for 500 euro(16gb)

If i ask my mate to send me over 1 via DHL, if he marks it as a gift, does that mean I will deffo not have to pay duty/vat on it when it arrives?

If any1 knows, that be great. thanks

It depends. sometimes it works sometimes they still charge duty. You can appeal it though.

Marking it as a gift will get it past the duty and VAT, but if it goes missing you won't be able to claim the €500 value of the phone from the postal service. I'm pretty sure that the value of a gift is capped at €50. Also, are you sure DHL will allow you to mark it as a gift? I know that DHL report all their packages to Customs.

From reading recent newspaper reports (Sunday Business Post, not the trashy tabloids, btw), the chances of a package getting through from outside the EU without paying cusotoms/VAT/etc. are slim to none.

Can't find the link (then again, I didn't read it online, I read it in a real newspaper, how very retro of me), but I am sure a search of the SBP website will find the article.

Personally, I wouldn't bother. Especially now as the 3GS can be unlocked.
