http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=461771 is this the cheapest non-sheitpiece laptop readily available to me right now? for basic home use only, nothing fancy, internet, dvds, music, basic gaming. or does anyone have another suggestion for me? cheers!

Don't buy that laptop. It'll be intolerably slow. You need at least 2GB of RAM with Vista. The processor isn't too hot either. Don't have time to be specifiic but for your (basic) needs avoid Celeron processors and get at least 2GB of RAM. You'll regret buying anything less and the cheap choice will soon end up a very expensive mistake when you decide that you need to replace it.

Don't buy 'downwards' just to get something - no matter what you think your needs with a computer nearly always expand beyond what you expect and you then have far too much time for regrets.

Komplett have a few Acers there for an extra €50 or 60 quid (ie €450 ish). With plenty of ram (3GB) and decent dual-core processors. For the sake of an extra few quid they would be a better buy.

I'm not trying to be smart, but would you consider second hand on Adverts.ie? I have seen better laptops than the link OP provided, for less money, in the last few weeks.

There's an Acer with a Blueray drive floating about on Adverts.ie at the moment, for less than 399.
