[Req] Shut down Laptop or leave it on sleep

    Hi All,

Just a quick question. I use my laptop once or twice everyday. In the best interests of the machines health, is it best to shut it down after use or should I instead leave it on sleep (and unplug it).

Any opinions from knowledgeable computer people will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks In Advance for all responses.

I'd probably hibernate it, or leave it on. Depending on what i was doing with it. If you're going to be putting it in a bag, i'd hibernate it, to prevent it from overheating.

I'd hibernate it or shut it down. I tend to prefer shutting down as I've seen a few machines come back from hibernation and something went a bit iffy so it had to be restarted.

Putting it to sleep just cuts power to most components, but keeps power to the ram (and a few other necessary components). It'll very slowly use up the battery (if unplugged), but if its plugged in thats not an issue. If you're just going off and leaving your laptop on the desk for a few hours, i'd put it to sleep. Most laptops will put it to sleep by default when you close the lid (although this can be customised in the power options).

I rarely bother with hibernation these days, as AC says it can be a little unstable, and it writes often massive files to the HDD.

Sleep generates no heat, despite keeping minimum power in the ram. Never had an issue keeping it in a bag. Thing is always as cold as if it had been shut down.
