I have had 4 back operations - the bottom 2 discs have each had the offending protrusions removed twice, between 1994 and 2002. I am currently cyling 200km+ per week (or at least will resume this once I recover from my recent fall), and am fitter as a 48 year old than I have ever been in my life. I still have a little sciatica in one leg, but it does not bother me when cycling (other than a lack of feeling in my foot).

I would suggest finding a good physio who may get you back on your bike again. Although crouching over the handlebars does not help, cycling is much better exercise for back sufferers than pretty much anything else except swimming. You need to build up the strength in your back muscles, but hopefully you will recover and be able to cycle again

Thanks Beasty, thats encouraging anyway. Going to physio tomorrow so fingers crossed it will clear up with the right treatment.
It's hard to know what to do with the bike set up - if anything, its fairly aero at the moment and from what i've read thats better than upright position if you have a bad back.
Ah well - three weeks on the floor watching the tour, how bad !
