iphone data usage on wifi

A friend of mine connected his iphone to the home wi-fi last night, which his phone is listed on. Checked his data allowance today and noted that 10MB had been taken off.

Phone didn't drop a signal etc. so how come 'free' wi-fi connection is counted as data usage?

The data use may have happened before it was on wifi?

You say the iPhone didn't drop the signal, but did it go to sleep at all? If it did it drops the wifi and reverts to gsm signal for e-mail etc

is there no way around that? that means you would be using gsm all alot in your house

Nope there's no way unless there's a jailbreak app.

When the iPhone goes into sleep mode, it disables everything except the Phone App, any App that uses Push Notifications and the iPod App. Things like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are disabled to conserve power

Purple Gorilla is right, unless you want to force your iPhone to stay awake all the time by disabling the Auto Lock (Settings>General>Auto Lock> set to "Never"). But unless you leave it plugged into the mains, it'll probably be dead within a few hours

    hey ,

was thinking of getting the iphone myself, is there unlimited internet usage with o2 ireland like there is in uk, or do you get charged when you use safari and stuff and are not in a wifi zone,

also is there an app so you can use your webtext on it,

sorry if these are silly questions, but want to get my facts before i commit to 18month contract.

    Thanks Folks

You get 1GB per month and 1 year free wifi usage with a service provider. I think it's Bitbuzz? 1GB is not unlimited, but there are very few users exceeding 750MB per month, never mind 1GB
also is there an app so you can use your webtext on it,
JellySMS and Eirtext are both available from the App store and let you use your webtext

If you have the phone plugged into the mains it will not drop wifi even when the phone goes to sleep.

to the person who said it's difficult to go over the 1gig limit.

    june - 1573 megabytes.
    july - 1983 megabytes.
    august - 2011 megabytes.

i done a lot of travelling in august using gps and maps but other than that it was just normal usage eg. surfing/facebook/twitter/email and a bit of youtube.
