Recently was given a 1999 mkiv golf. 1.4l.

Owner said the engine over heated. coming home, removing the thermostat solved all the problems.

the thermostat was odd. found similar images online which suggests the themrostat was that of a mk3 golf.

I knew the prev owner had the engine replaced. he was told it was for a referb 2002 golf engine
    how can i know if
    a) the engine in it is not a mark 3 engine.
    b) if a mark3 thermostat was put in a mark4 engine by mistake, including the thermo housing or not and thus would fitting a mark 4 thermo solve the problem

Having problems finding the engine code. the barcode sticker is gone as the water pump was replaced last year. I know its printed on the engine block somewhere

Can you take a picture of the engine? I dont know if youll see it or not, but if you look at the block the engine code will be stamped on it... Think its at the top of the gearbox
