your ATF will be boiled after a few laps, best to use one of their own cars.

Insurance a bit of a sore subject for most, very hard (impossible even) to get proper cover cheaply

    your policy won't cover you.

so basically if i was to smack my car down there , im on my own !!

not worth the risk in running either of my cars so

Get a few people together and buy a track car is what I would suggest.

Your "lofe insurence" would be in order, assuming you told the truth at proposal stage.

Mondello is a good track to drive your own car on, after your run let the car sit for a few min's, engine running with handbreak off bonnet open to let her cool...
Breaks & Tyres should be in excellent order, get/borrow a good helmet, and bring extra fuel & water, oil etc.

Even at a trackday you will be watched, and if they feel you are acting the mick, or just plain unsafe. You'll be shown the door...

Track days are not just about speed, learning about control is far more important imo.

Your Insurance will not cover you for trackdays, it can be bought, but very expensive..
Everyone should do it at least once, its a safe legal way to give yer car welly..:)

    Brakes not breaks please :D

Mondello is an good track, but is imho almost prohibitively expensive. Have a look up North. Nutts Corner maybe? Alternatively get a ferry to Holyhead. Anglessey Circuit is tremendous and is only a few miles away. Make a w/e of it.

Mondello is good, it's a technical circut and there's lots of vids on youtube ect to see what it's like. I personally wouldn't do an open day because you wont know the people on track with you. The club days are great though!

Do you regularly smack your car when out driving in normal circumstances? If not, then I wouldn't be overly concerned, just drive at your own pace and get out of everyone elses way when they're coming up on you.

The most recent one was last friday. Some nice cars including GT3s and a pile of all generation M3s. Loads of modded stuff too but very little "howyas" in starlet turbos. Unless you have something with a fair bit of go under the bonnet i wouldn't be too pushed about it. Expect some heavy tyre wear afterwards..

no worries there, sub 4 seconds 0-60 :D

Just do it. You wont regret it. Just take the advice of the guys who have some experience...
    Prepare your car.
Take your time until you get a feel for your car and the track.
Be kind to your car if you care about it, give it a good rest often.
If its your first time, listen carefully to the briefing and watch the flagmen when on the track.
Dont worry about the insurance, just dont go mad and you will make it home.

Been looking to do a day myself, but the costs are seriously expensive when compared to some of the tracks on the continent...

Off to the continent with you so.

I go to these now and again, I dont go out until the afternoon so to let the "hero's" go out first and make an ass of themselves. It is great fun but you dont know what Mick or jack is going to be on the track with you trying to be a hero overtaking everyone like a fool. You can spot the ones who have been out before because they can take the cornors proper, steer clear of the ones who take cornors wide as they have not a clue and will collide with you. Most people are out on the morning so the afternoon is quieter. After 3 laps of really going for it your tyres will have obvious wear on them.
I have a recently got reasonably quick Bmw 320i I go out on and I service her fully after I have finished my laps. Once a month somtimes more I will go out, nice way to vent your frustrations driving the stones out of your car hehe. Just take things easy for your first 2 or 3 laps and learn to cornor properly then go balls out!

I Do the bikes there-its a great track-very twisty and tight- id never consider bringin a car-dunno how id overtake without serious risk of damage-theres just no room imo!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 116 ✭✭Mick K

Im a regular track nut in Mondello,Have even organised my own this year which was prob one of the most successfull private trackday so far this year,Even got a mag feature,I had serious cars and serious drivers on the day.

My advice would be dont do it in the coupe as it wont last 2 laps without boiling over.

And also while your on here rabbiting on about your car being a scrapper from AutoXchange I wouldnt promote the fact you intend on doing a trackday.

Its not a race event. You overtake easily in a car because slower drivers pull in to let you pass. (at least they do in the better organised days)

Yea i dont race either-so theres no real overtaking?

I think its fair to say regardless of wheater its a private day or public day there's always a demon of some sort on track.Always one guy will want to be overtaking and hard too.

In terms of the track itself which would people consider better - Anglessey or Mondello?

I've recently done Anglessey myself and couldn't speak more highly of it... Good surface... Good wide track... Challenging bends... Open Pit lane structure

    Is mondello on a par?

Also in terms of the rules for Mondello

    1. Is there unlimited track time?
    2. Are they strict on tax, NCT, etc?

the ops car can do 0-60 in 3.8 seconds according to him so GT3's should be no problem to him lol

Thanks for bumping the thread. One thing to note though it that track days are not race days, there's all classes of machinery out there, so whether or not X is faster than Y to 60 is largely irrelevant. The last thing I want when I'm out is a pair of cowboys dicing

I personally wouldn't take my car out on an open day, as there are too many unknown drivers sharing the track. I might do the odd VIP day (if they would have me) but for now a couple of club days per year is enough.

Most of the single marque websites (Nissan/BMW/Lotus/porsche)have had their own TDs this year as well of some of the general sites, though for most of these you need to be an established member to qualify. Best advice would be to get involved on one of these sites, get to know a few people, attend static meets, attend other TDs as a passenger (one of the most fun days I've had out was as a pax lap whore, jumping out of one car into another...).

Anglessey is a superior track, and so much better value too.
