Not living in Ireland but would love to know how the game went.
As usual the shower of sh*ts on the Gaa.ie, Hoganstand.com, and Meath/gaa.ie havent bothered their boll*x to write a report.

    The most they have is
"Meath strolled to victory over Waterford by 1-20 to 0-08 in Navan."

Id say bcc.co.uk will have one up faster.

Just wondering if anyone was at the match today and what ye thought of the performance.
    All opinions and views welcome

    Cheers

    Final Score:
    Meath 1-20- Waterford 0-08

Unfortunetly I wasn't able to make the game, however from what I've gathered listening to the local radio Waterford were largely disappointing!

Impressive overall but hard to read too much into into it.
Big Joe kicked 3 beautys in the first half, good to see him show a return to form. Chris O'Connor was excellent in defence, got a couple of scores too.
The only problem i have is with the Meath defence as a unit. When teams start running at them they look really vunerable, including Waterford.
For a ten minute period in the second half Waterford were on top and kicked 3-4 points without reply, not exactly a reassuring sign.
I hope Meath get a decent team in the next draw, to charge 20euros into that training session last night was a joke, and them games are no good for Meath football, no disrespect to Waterford intended.

good to see there life in the Meath team after defeat in leinster semi. Heard a priest traveled down to last night's game ready to administer last rites to the Royal County. waste of a journey!

    Meath 1-20 Waterford 0-08

MEATH recovered from a sluggish start in both halves to comfortably progress to the second round of the All-Ireland qualifiers at Pairc Tailteann last night.

The game was well over as a contest by the break, but it didn't look so facile for Eamonn O'Brien's side at the start. Indeed, it took them a full 15 minutes to get going. Smothered by their opponents, they trailed 0-2 to 0-1 at one stage and Waterford even missed a goal chance in that time.
It was a perfect evening for football with the Pairc Tailteann pitch looking resplendent under the summer sunshine, but the air was humid and it sucked the life and legs out of both teams.

Overall, the quality of football on view was poor for long stages and only Meath's ability to shoot accurately from long range saved their embarrassment. It was towards half time, with the visitors tiring, when they began shooting at will and on sight. They hit seven wides and 0-12 before the break and it was enough to see them home against the minnows.

There were stars for the underdogs, however. Wayne Hennessy had a bright opening but the skilful O'Gorman twins, Maurice and Thomas and Shane Briggs were outstandingly resolute in defence. At midfield they were wiped out, though, and the deficiency in that department gradually killed off their challenge.

Meath were best served by Joe Sheridan who looked menacing from the very start. He's bang in form again and will be their playmaker for as long as they are in the championship. Tearaway corner back Chris O'Connor had a fine game with three points from play, Cormac McGuinness worked hard too and Cian Ward was lethal, as usual, from frees.
But in many ways it was a no-win situation for the Leinster side. Just as Waterford hit three points on the trot after the restart the vocal crowd were on their side's case straight away again -- there's no let-up when you have a pedigree like Meath's.

They opened the scoring through McGuinness after six minutes, but most of the 5,000 crowd were cribbing with their display after 10 minutes. Waterford took a one-point lead after 10 minutes as their swarm attack style of play opened the way for points for Hennessy and Patrick Hurney, when a goal was most definitely on. They lost influential full-forward Ger Power after a few minutes through injury but didn't look out of place on the big stage.

The crowd wanted Meath to play more direct and let their feelings known from the stands. Sheridan duly levelled the scores with a fine point and the Senechalstown man then had a goal chance seconds later which Tom Wall saved brilliantly.

With almost the entire Meath half empty they began to attack with the wind at their backs and hit two points on the trot from corner back Chris O'Connor and Peadar Byrne. At this stage the wind was growing and it aided the home side. Waterford looked to be retreating into their shells and were totally outclassed at midfield and couldn't win any primary possession.

Ward hit two frees in a row to leave Meath 0-6 to 0-2 up after 27 minutes. It was a stop-start affair with play broken up through injuries and poor home shooting -- they hit five wides in 20 minutes.
But Waterford were camped in their own half and couldn't get out. Meath hit another three wides and notched further scores from impressive corner back O'Connor and Byrne. O'Connor will have a future as a corner-forward, never mind defender, after this impressive display.

The game effectively ended as a contest towards the end of the first half. Byrne added another score and O'Brien's men, blessed with more firepower and artillery, stretched eight points clear at the interval, 0-12 to 0-2, and left John Kiely's side without a score for half an hour.

The highlight was a booming Sheridan score on the stroke of half time. How they left him off against Dublin for so long is anyone's guess.
Waterford salvaged their pride with a much tighter display in the second half with some fine points by Munster player Liam O'Lionain and Tony Grey and they left Meath frustrated as the game wore on. Had the Decies not imploded midway through the first half this contest would have been much tighter.

As it is, Meath progress with their forwards in better fettle. Late sub Jamie Queeney showed their strength in depth with a late goal but there is still much more to do to get where they want to.

    Scorers -- Meath: C Ward 0-4 (4f), J Sheridan, C O'Connor, P Byrne 0-3 each, J Queeney 1-0, B Farrell, D Bray (2f), C McGuinness 0-2 each, S McAnarney 0-1; Waterford: W Hennessy (1f), Liam O'Lionain 0-2, T Grey, P Hurney, C McGrath, B Wall 0-1 each.

Can't honestly say Meath have recovered.I don't think the team is settled and a draw against weak opposition like Waterford will just paint over the cracks until the next day.

Whereas Gilroy has nailed players down to certain positions,O Brien doesn't seem to know what players to put where although Caoimhin King should remain in the backs.

I have a feeling that Meath will get either get Sligo,Laois or Westmeath in the next round.

I'd fancy Meath to beat any of them teams and we all seen what momentum did for us in '07.
But make no mistake, Meath are all over the shop position wise and unless O'Brien stops arseing about, its gonna be a v.short summer.

Waterford now left with half-year wait

    Meath 1-20; Waterford 0-8
Meath justified their pre-match favouritism in the opening round of this year’s All-Ireland Football qualifiers when they recorded a comprehensive 1-20 to 0-8 win over Waterford at Pairc Tailteann on Saturday evening last.
In front of a gathering of about 5,000, it was the Deise that got off to the better start, cancelling out Cormac McGuinness’s early strike and going 0-2 to 0-1 up inside the opening 10 minutes with points from Wayne Hennessy and Patrick Hurney.
However, this was as good as it was going to get for John Kiely’s side as Meath, who made four changes to the team that lost to Dublin in the first round of the Leinster Championship, assumed control in all sectors of the field and led by 0-12 to 0-2 at the break. Chris O’Connor, who started at corner-back and Cormac McGuinness who lined out at centre-back, were among the Royals’ first-half scorers.
The second period was somewhat better for Waterford from a scoring perspective, kicking six scores to the winners’ nine after the change of ends, with the hard-working Liam O Lionain striking the crossbar with an effort on goal shortly after the turnaround. The only green flag of the game was raised in the last minute when substitute Jamie Queeney finished well to add gloss to Meath’s tally.
Eamon O’Brien’s charges on the night had some very good performances. Chris O’Connor who kicked three points over the 70 minutes impressed immensely as did Joe Sheridan, Cian Ward, and Brian Farrell. Waterford saw good displays by the O’Gorman twins and Shane Briggs in the full-back line while at the other end of the field Wayne Hennessy and Liam O Lionain with two points apiece stood out most. Conor McGrath, Tony Grey and Brian Wall also got on the scoresheet.
Meath now march on to the next round of the qualifiers and they will be quietly confident that with a few favourable draws they can have a prolonged involvement in the All-Ireland series.
For Waterford, the players and management will now have to wait until next January for their next competitive game when the McGrath Cup is played prior to the start of the National Leagues.
Once again the question will have to be asked what suffering such a defeat to one of the stronger counties will do for football within Waterford. County Boards, Provincial Councils, ex-Presidents and others that have a vote at congress must ask themselves was it necessary to get rid of the Tommy Murphy Cup as quickly as it was introduced? Okay, the competition may have been low-key but the GAA at Central Council level have to take responsibility for this due to their failure to market it properly.
Over the past number of years hurling has seen the introduction of the Christy Ring, Nicky Rackard and Lowry Maher Cups. It’s time the GAA did the same for football and perhaps clubs in Waterford should set the ball rolling by putting motions before county convention asking for this to happen.
Nobody disputes the workload put in by those involved in the various football teams within the county in a very quite way. Of course maybe if Waterford were able to field their strongest team the picture would be rosier, but for the foreseeable future this isn’t on the cards. So it’s time those personnel we have available were given the opportunity of competing against opposition where they can hold our own and possibly win honours.
    Meath: P O’Rourke; C O’Connor, A Moyles, E Harrington; S Kenny, C McGuinness, C King; N Crawford, B Meade; P Byrne, J Sheridan, S McAnarney; D Bray, B Farrell, C Ward. Subs: M Burke for P Byrne, Regan for C McGuinness, S Sheridan for A Moyles, J Queeney for S Kenny, M Ward for N Crawford.
    Scorers: Meath: C Ward 0-4 (4f), J Sheridan, C O’Connor, P Byrne 0-3 each, J Queeney 1-0, B Farrell, D Bray (2f), C McGuinness 0-2 each, S McAnarney 0-1.
    Waterford: T Wall; S Briggs, T O’Gorman, M O’Gorman; E Rockett, L Lawlor, T Grey; S O’Hare, B Phelan; W Hennessy, B Wall, L O Lionain; S Cunningham, G Power, P Hurney. Subs: C McGrath for G Power, E Walsh for S O’Hare, Ml O’Gorman for S Cunningham, J Phelan for C McGrath.
    Scorers: Waterford: W Hennessy (1f), Liam O Lionain 0-2 each, T Grey, P Hurney, C McGrath, B Wall 0-1 each.
    Referee: T Quigley (Dublin)
