Teaching Gaeilge without the Text-book

    I've been given the job of coordinating the whole-school strategy for Gaeilge (it's a fairly new school) in my primary school in Dublin. My own opinion is that we should adopt a creative and thematic approach into which all teachers would need to buy, so that for a period of a couple of weeks, all Gaeilge in the school would revolve around a particular topic so that all age groups would then have an opportunity to use what they have learned around the school.

    Each teacher would have the freedom to design lessons they feel best suit the abilities of their children by making use of real objects, feidhmeanna teanga and different teaching strategies etc... so that our goals in Gaeilge might actually be achieved.

    I have consulted with the principal and a cuiditheoir from the dept. and they both like the idea, and I'm willing the put in as much work as is needed to get the resources together and help teachers with their planning, however the rest of the staff aren't too hot on the idea as it would involve ditching the Treo Nua programme. Many of the teachers are unwilling to do this as they're either not confident enough or willing to put the effort into designing thematic lessons that suit their classes abilities best and say they feel more comfortable with pre-designed lessons from the programme.

    How can I convince the staff that the "additional" planning, while being tough initially will benefit the whole school?

    Any ideas from teachers in similar circumstances?
