Are bitey zombies enough to overtake the world?

According to Brooks zombie outbreaks are happing all the time, minor outbreaks have been put down by those that are ready and prepared to fight the horde. However the examples in the survival guide show that when the virus is spread through zombie bites the possibility of massive outbreaks are extremely rare. Zombies need to be in great numbers to overrun community's and it's very hard for them to to build up to those numbers.

I'm convinced the Zombie disaster will come when the zombie virus spreads in the same way as the flu and people don't become zombified for a few days allowing them to infect massive portions of the population who will all turn at more or less the same time.

This would be an absolute disaster, it would be impossible to trust anyone as they may not know them selfs if they are infected and cities would be over run in the space of days. (after the people turn into zombies they dry up and can no longer spread the virus without biting). When I wrote about this type of zombie virus I didn't really think it through fully but the more I think about it the harder it becomes to deal with.

How would you deal with this type of zombie outbreak? One that infects you without even being dead or knowing it's a zombie?

I do think it would pan out like in other films though, with some people being naturally immune, and survival would depend on whether or not those who can make a vaccine live long enough to find out that some people are immune.

peoples stupidity would make it possible, that and the infected spreading the virus around the world through illegal immigration and stuff like that, the virus can spread through a human at different rates. I really think that one of the things that'll **** us over are the illegal transplants from china that the organs/skin is taken from random dead people. a small skin graft could give the patients maybe a week to escape the country in which he got the graft and bam there's another continent on the menu.... so its not just the bites we're gonna have to be worried about

Look at the current swine flu as an example. The break out started in mexico and nearly every european country has had someone infected. Millions of people travel every week in the world and could visit many cities on a business trip, hoiliday etc. The world is too small to contain a strong virus to one land mass.

Difference would be that swine flu, while a pain in the ass and deadly to some, isn't an all out killer. If a very high mortality rate type plague was doing the rounds I'm sure a few countries would be more than prepared to go on lock-down.

Think it was an episode of sliders where they had detectors that measured a persons core-temp before they could get past, like a metal detector for disease.
