Hi i sprained my ankle pretty badly last night and cannot walk without a lot of pain, i don't have a car or access to a car and i'm due to sign on and collect my welfare this coming tuesday here in galway, is it possible to call the office and explain i can't actually leave the house assuming i'm still in pain tuesday? Also as per the thread name, if i rang the post office in advance could my girlfriend collect my welfare payment?

you should be in a better position to go yourself on tues - I dont think anyone else can be allowed to claim your dole - if they allowed that someone could set up a business claiming dole for employed people.

The answer is no. You have to be fit and available for work (so able to go sign on and collect your own payment) - so if your ankle doesn't get better you are probably better off on illness benefit.
