Could he get any more conceited and annoying?

I'm so bored of him and the way he slags other famous people for being needy. Whilst appearing on TV continually to tell us about artistic integrity and not wanting the limelight.

    IMVHO.

    I concur.

    I quite liked Ghost Town

I've a massive respect for his work.

I can see, especially when he's so forthright with the opinions that you speak of, how he would come across as hypocritical at times. However, you have to keep in mind that he's a very intelligent man and that these hypocrisies wouldn't be lost on him.

So I believe what he's doing makes sense in his own head...and if I ever was arsed enough to research it I'm sure there'd be good reason for it.

He's quite smug but then again, he's done two of the funniest sit-coms in the last 10 years so he's entitled to be rather pleased with himself.

Yep, his shows have been brilliant, his film acting roles so-so. But as person he has always come across as a dick imo.

I prefer Steve Coogan or Caroline Aherne tbh. I prefer loads of sitcoms tbh.
    Father Ted, DTDD, etc

Yes having watched the American office, would have to say Gervais was funnier. one of the best comedy creations was David Brent

I don't like Ricky Gervais. I don't find him funny. I didn't think The Office was funny. I watched bits of Extras and he indeed came across as smug but I just took that to be the character he played.

And people argue that stupid "Daddy Long Legs" bit as though it were gospel. It's not bloody true! Crane Flys do have teeth. Their teeth just aren't strong enough to break through human skin. They are, however, prefectly adequate when it comes to thier prey. So there is a point to their toxicity. The point is to use it on their prey, humans not being under that particular umbrella.

I like Ricky's stuff. Liked the Office and Extras. Not groundbreaking but funny enough.

His humpty dumpty joke was very funny all the same.

Eh I don't think he was actually lecturing us on the Crane Fly, he's a comedian? He says things that make people laugh?

It's no wonder you don't find him funny

    Dear oh dear

If anyone think's he's smug, I'd recommend listening to his appearance on Desert Island Discs. He comes across as sincere, honest and genuine. His affection for his family is evident as is his acknowledgement that he is extremely lucky in his career and to be where he is now.

I would put any smugness down to him acting up. The scenes of Andy Millman and Jonathan Ross playing around bare-chested in Extras were a direct hilarious answer to his annoying pallyness with Ross.

As you can see, I think the guy is brilliant and am looking forward to seeing his live show in November here in the UK.

He says things that make people laugh?
He does not say anything that makes me laugh.
    he's a comedian?
I can see why this has been phrased as a question. The answer is; not a good one.
It's no wonder you don't find him funny
Yeah. No wonder at all, in fact it's very simple. He's not.

By the way, I am well aware that he isn't an entomologist, my point was regarding people who think he is. All because of a "joke". A "joke" not very close to reality. It is widely recognised that for something to be funny there should be a grain of truth in it.

    He is a comic genius

    He's funny at times.
But he plays the same character in all his roles.

I liked Ricky Gervais until I realised he wasn't acting in any of his series

He's a genius, The Office and Extras are classics and his stand up and podcasts are great too

TV work and podcasts are brilliant but the movies are very poor and his stand up work is just OK.

Was a very good article by Giles Coren in the Times (UK version) discussing his stance on Bullfighting...i thought Coren tore a few strips off him, would be interested to see how / if he responds.

He responded on his blog, I think he made a few great points himself, scroll down a little bit for it

It's all down to personal taste in the end.

I find Ricky Gervais funny, but found most of The Office to be boring.

People might criticise me for not finding Caroline Aherne, Phil Jupitus, Dara O'Briain, Sacha Baron-Cohen, Ardal O'Hanlon and especially Graham Norton funny, but I wouldn't start a war over it.

There's a lot of "emperor's new clothes" with a lot of celebs, where some influential critic, or PR guru, decides to promote someone as being good at what they do, triggering people into thinking "They must be good if he thinks they're good".

I loved the Office but thought Extras was a bit crap. His podcasts are supposed to be good.

Gervais is an incredibly talented individual in fairness. Even if you don't enjoy his work, you cannot deny that. Extras is very funny imo. I haven't seen the office yet.

Karl Pilkington > Gervais though. ;)

I like his stand up but i hated the office thought it was tripe!!Oh and extras sucked and he sucks in night at the museam

I just can't fathom this odd trend of claiming all and sundry to be "a genius". Ricky Gervais is "a genius". Amy Winehouse is "a genius".

*Sigh* There once was a time when the term "genius" really meant something. The word was used to describe the likes of Leonardo daVinci, Albert Einstein or Sir Isaac Newton. Nowadays it's thrown around whenever someone writes a song/TV show that a large group of people like.

That's the kind of comedy that I like, when it takes my fancy.:pac:

I like Gervais, his stand up is enjoyable, quite liked ghost town and extras, but hes far from my favourite comedian. I find it a little suprising how well hes done compared to some other comedians who are brilliant but not nearly as well known, for example, Adam and Joe. How are they not comedy superstars? But i do like Gervais, especially the podcasts. He, steve merchant and karl pilkington make a fantstic team. I just find his level of stardom, perhaps not undeserved just slightly out of porportion to the usual level for a comedian.

He's a natural on TV. He's a natural at stand up comedy. But good god, he doesn't half know how to pick the worst films ever to be in.

He seems okay, a bit up his own hole about the state of comedy in his native Britain, but give me him any day over any lame comedian from Ireland or a "I'm mad me" one from America.

Him and Sacha Baron Cohen are the best at what they do right now (I detested Bruno though).
