About 4 years ago i went through a period of extreme depression where I completely stopped looking after myself. I spent 2 years rarely washing my teeth. I have had pains in my mouth ever since then but cannot face the financial bill of going to the dentist. It has come to the point where I feel like I have to bite the bullet.

I am wondering what the cheapest and best way to get my teeth sorted is? I have a feeling it will be a big job. I haven't seen a dentist or a hygienest in 5/6 years.

It's good that you are facing up to this. Well done. You shouldn't have to suffer with your teeth.

Biting the bullet means you have to get expert dental advice ... as for the cheapest & best way to do this, it depends entirely on your teeth. You feel it may be a big job ... maybe it will, maybe it won't. The only way to know for sure is to make an appointment, and get the expert advice.

Speaking from my own experience ... in terms of dentists, and having any work done on your teeth ... the fear is always worse than the actual event. When you do get your teeth sorted, the absence of pain and the restoration of confidence in your smile and appearance ... feels marvellous.

Dentists are very aware of the fears people have about their teeth ... and they work very hard to help and advise you ... the myths about butchers ripping teeth out with great big pliers are just that ... myths.

There is a Dentistry forum here on boards ... if you want, I can move this thread for you. You might get more specific suggestions etc there. I'm sure you will find a lot of support and people in the same boat as you.

Let me know if you want this thread moved. Best of luck.

If after your initial consultation with the dentist you are looking at major work. Definitely get a quote for getting it done up north or in another country. You can save a bundle

yes, the mods there are amazing :p

OP, I'll move this thread to DI with a redirect. I think you'll get more help there, a lot of the regulars are dentists.

VHI do pretty cheap dental insurance-waiting periods of up to a year but could be well worth it if you need a lot of work

you may be surprised at how easily fixable it all is when you get to the dentist.

first things first, go to the dentist and get them cleaned and find out exactly what needs doing. alot of the soreness could be gum disese which will be alot better after a course of antibiotics.

if you do need tonnes of fillings the cost can be spread a bit by having him put temporary fillings in and gradually getting them switched to permanent fillings, that's what my boyfriend did as he needed a fair few fixed and simply couldn'f afford to have them all done at once.
