Is it legal to use hidden cameras to check the workers?

    Hi,
One of my bosses mentioned (by chance), that there are several hidden cameras in our shop (fast food...) to find out who might be stealing. There are no costumers on that area, so they use them "against" the workers. We have for about 8 regular cameras as well, so I cannot really understand why. I am not a thief, but I don't think this is correct or fair. Is it legal?
    Thanks!

AFAIK you just have to informed that cameras are in use. I don't think their exact position has to be pointed out, just know that cameras are operating in a particular zone. Hidden cameras would be of no use if the thief knew where they were.

Security cameras trained on staff areas (except toilets and changing areas) are perfectly reasonable and should form part of overall security.

With regards to using them "against" the workers ..... it's possible someone on your shift is nicking from the till. As a result everyone on the shift is under suspicion including you. Claims of innocence don't really wash in the real world, do you really think the real thief isn't claiming s/he's innocent too? Camera evidence could help eliminate you. Right now they're probably your best friend (unless you're guilty of course).

In many businesses theft is perpetrated more by employees than by customers. Sensitive areas such as tills and stock rooms are usually protected from customers, but employees, on the other hand, can access all areas, handle the cash, stock, etc. They have much more opportunity and unfortunately some make use of it.

So, it seems to be legal. Thanks for the answer!

It appears so, but it also appears there are laws such as data protection which define how cameras should be used, who has access to tapes, and if your voice can be recorded without your permission. I suggest you consult a legal professional if you have any concerns.

but cameras can also work for you, if you are accused of something and the camera does not show it...

A long time ago there was a case of a fast food joint using hidden cameras in the toilets (not over cubicles) over the sink area. A person claimed to have slipped and hurt themselves on a wet floor left unattended by the cleaner.....but the cameras said otherwise and the case was thrown out!

Just as an FYI the privacy bill in ireland has yet to be passed.
