Tax book

What is the story about buying a car with no taxbook? I'm looking into buying a car from a friend of the family, buy he has lost the taxbook as the car has been idle for a while now. I know he can apply for a new one, but is there any way I can apply for one once he signs the change of ownership form? He doesn't want to go through the bother as it is a car that in his eyes is just taking up space.

The change of ownership form is the tax book, unless its one of the very old versions i think its pre 1993 or something around that year.

Otherwise I think your supposed to send the tax book back with that form, im sure if you wrote on it that you lost it, or added a note or something they would sort it out.

EDIT: Yup its a vehicle registered before 1 January 1993, that you need the form for
    Source

Also gives info about lost documents, €12 fill in a form signed/witnessed by the guards and bung it into the tax office.

It's a 1988 Bmw 318I. So I'd just have to fill out this form, there is a box to tick saying the tax book is not available, send off whatever the replacement cost is and that should be it?

I dont know, because the fee is only to request a replacement one.

If there is a box to tick maybe they expect you to have lost the book in 21 years and will give you one for free, if i doesnt say to include a supplement i suppose you dont have to.
Although for the sake of €12 I would trow it in just in case it gets delayed if they want a fee

It's going to be a long summer of cut-weld-grind-repeat. But hopefully it'll be worth it.
