    hi,
just posting up here for a bit of encouragement i suppose :)

i havent been on a bicycle in a long time, maybe 7 or 8 years. i used to enjpy a bit of cycling, but then i got a motorbike and that took over. eventually the motor bike caused me a lot of damage so ive been in cars for the last 2 years. i got back on 2 wheels yesterday and have to admit it feels great.

i got a giant escape R1 on the cycle to work scheme and, while it will be a while before i have the stamina to cycle to work (45k round trip) i am defintely enjoying it.

i did around 7k yesterday evening and am just back from an 8k spin. im going to try and get up to 15k over the next few weeks so i can go a bit further afield.

any thoughts on the bike for general road use? any goals i should be aiming for etc?

Just keep increasing the amount you do every week.

General commuting advice goes like this.

Start commuting ASAP its easier for excercise and TBH 22.5k sounds tough but once you can do it it will be easy. I'd push yourself to get to that distance (it's going to be up to 1.5 hours probably faster). Then you can bike to work one day and cycle home the next -- assuming you have faciliaties for overnight parking. From their once you can do the full commute you can Start going one day per week, then 2, etc etc... Commuting is by far the best way to start getting used to cycling because you are almost buying time not commuting.
