Hey, I posted about this a few weeks back but the situation still remains. I bought a Trek 1.2, Sora set. Its a double mech but the front mech has three clicks on it. The chain keeps falling off so I brought it to my LBS who thinks its a tripple mech on a double set. So after phone calls to the seller he is now saying that its supposed to be like this.

Can anyone else tell me if you have a double how does your front mech work? Two or three clicks? I'm pretty sure Im being fed BS but wanna check before I challenge him. I wouldnt really care but the gear change can be quite hard (it feels like it may break) and the bloody chain keeps falling off both inside and outside. I tried to get it sorted by changing the settings but without any joy.

Any and all responses will be great....

    Thanks

Two clicks thus three positions for me.

My Giant SCR1 has two clicks on the from mech. Never understood why but it does the two clicked with one single level movement so never been a problem.

Should the stopper adjustments stop it falling of either end though, regardless of how many clicks?

The shifter is indexed ("clicks"), not the mech. the same shifter works with double and triple derailleurs. The triple and double front mechs look quite different so you can easily tell which you have:

    Double:

    Triple:

I imagine the triple mech would still work on a double chainset - simply a matter of adjustment. In any case it's up to the bike shop to either adjust the mech so it works properly or replace it with one that does.

yes, the mech is unaware of the shifter, it only does what it's told to, and will travel smoothly between the inner and outer limits depending on the cable tension. The only difference between a double and triple mech is the cage shape and/or the distance it may travel - i.e. the triple possibly has a further range of motion, but I doubt it. It's likely the shifter has trim positions on it.
The chain falling off is ONLY to do with the positions of the limit screws, or the position of the mech nothing else.
sounds like your LBS is a POSBS. :(

I'd say it's just a sign that your meant to ride a triple!!!!

I recently put a set of Tiagra Triple levers onto a Dura Ace double set up (long story), anyway, if you adjust the limit screws on the front derailleur correctly there will be no problem. I concur with Kenmc, based on what you have told us your LBS are rubbish. Halfords-esque I would say.

The new 105 levers work on both double and triple, maybe it's the same with Sora also.

Actually I had a Sora Double front mech on my Trek 1.5 aswel as shifters. It also had three clicks but never dropped the chain, probably something to do the the limit screw set up alright. I was told that the extra click was just to make minor adjustments to the front derailleur. For example, you are in the small ring, click up once and you are in the big ring. Suppose you move down to the smallest cog on the back, the chances are your chain line will cause it to rub off the outside of the derailleur cage. This is what the final click is for, to make a minor adjustment to it's position, just enought to solve any annoying rub but not to actually change gear. Although saying this, if you used this click in the lower/easier gears at the back you might actually cause the opposite effect and get rub on the inside of the cage and possibly dislodge the chain from the outer chainring. Let me know how you get on!

Could be setting myself up for a fall here
But in the picturs above. Is the longer mech not the triple one as it has to reach further when changing to granny ring.

I think you'll find it's the one that says "triple" on it.

See that now. But have a triple with the top one on it
